This review is from: Legends of Radio: The Ultimate Sherlock Holmes Collection (Audio CD)
This collection, aside from the first two recordings of Welles and Rathbone, assembles the radio series of Sherlock Holmes as it was after 1945. The sequence of actors portraying Holmes is Tom Conway ('46-'47, 14 recs), John Stanley ('47-'48, 11 recs), John Gielgud ('55, 9 recs) and Carleton Hobbs ('60s, 3 recs). This comes to 20 hours of plays on 20 CDs. The power of radio plays is less in Kilowatts than it the ability of its performers to pull you inside the story by the force of their voice alone. For those who are used to a fuller presentation on film, this is a unique opportunity to judge these players from a single dimension, their vocal tones and inflexions. I thought Gielgud did the best job, although Tom Conway was a close second. I guess theatrical background is a big help to reaching this kind of a talent. As the booklet mentions, Tom Conway's voice and Rathbone's were very close. See if you can tell the difference.

I have been an avid fan of Sherlock Holmes in all of its forms (the text, the DVD, the CD) These audio CDs are great to take with you on long auto trips since they are most enjoyable and will make the I95 move along nicely even when it isn't. Production quality is very good and the performances fine. I recommend this collection highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars ELEMENTARY DR WATSON, July 19, 2008
This review is from: Legends of Radio: The Ultimate Sherlock Holmes Collection (Audio CD)
WHAT CAN ANYONE SAY ABOUT HOLMES, WATSON, AND BAKER STREET THAT AS NOT BEEN WRITTEN.
THE WONDERFUL CASE BOOKS WRITTEN BY DR JOHN WATSON STARTS EACH STORY BY CREATING THE PERFECT ATMOSPHERE TO EACH EPISODE. LONDON FOG, MIST, HACKNEY CARRIAGES, COBBLED STREETS.THEN THE CASES PROCEED.

BASIL RATHBONE AND NIGEL BRUCE ARE MY FAVOURITES HOLMES AND WATSON, WITH JOHN GIELGUD AND RALPH RICHARDSON NEXT. THE WORST, ORSON WELLES, LUCKY HE PLAYED THE PART OF HOLMES AND MORIARTY ONLY ONCE. ITS GREAT TO HAVE THEM ON CDS NOW AND ONE CAN NOW LISTEN TO THEM IN BED, AS WELL AS THE CAR
'THE BAKER STREET DOZEN' WELL WORTH YOUR DOUGH
