Pound for Pound -- Not the Best Video, October 22, 2001
This review is from: Legends of the Ring - Sugar Ray Robinson - Pound for Pound [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I was disappointed after viewing this video. I was expecting more footage from Sugar Ray's fights, as well as some discussion/commentary about Robinson's contributions to boxing. Instead, there are endless scenes of Robinson receiving awards for "fatherhood" and other community service stuff. Half a dozen times of hearing "Well, thank you very much. I want to say I'm really honored here today" is just too much. Same with legions of aging retired boxers saying Robinson was the greatest fighter, pound for pound--and nothing more beyond that bare statement. What this video lacks is describing exactly what made Robinson the greatest. For example, his development of what he called the "turtle" (Ali later called it "rope a dope," with which he used to upset Forman in Zaire) is never mentioned. Nor does this video deal with his style, his approach to workouts, and glosses over his mentoring of other fighters. All that said, the Sugar Ray video I want to own simply does not exist. While flawed, it is better than not having any film of Sugar Ray. If you're at all a fight fan--you have to get this video; if only to get that ugly, stupid and insulting portrayal of Robinson from "Raging Bull" out of your mind....

The Greatest of All Time, December 3, 2001
This review is from: Legends of the Ring - Sugar Ray Robinson - Pound for Pound [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Sugar Ray Robinson is considered by many to be the greatest boxer/fighter of all time, and I couldn't agree more. I don't tend to follow the trends or fads, or just agree with people for the sake of fitting in, but I'll tell you, he was truly the best that's ever done it. This video is interesting. It contains clips from a lot of Sugar Ray Robinson's fights, and even includes some footage of a few of his matches before turning pro. That's some good, old footage. You simply can't go wrong with this video. A lot of the video features Sugar Ray Robinson discussing his career, but it's him "now," many years after his last ever boxing match. This film was probably made sometime in the 1970's, I would assume, so that's the "now" I'm refering to. It's nice to see that Ray Robinson looks good after all of those fights. To me, he looks and sounds good, and even seems a bit nostalgic as he journeys back to the days of his boxing glory. This video is one way for you to have an important film, containg important footage, of The Greatest Boxer/Fighter Of All Time. Sugar Ray Robinson seems timeless, in a sport that's been around long before him, and has continued long after he left it. He's still the greatest!

THE BEST FIGHTER/BOXER EVER !!!, November 16, 2001
This review is from: Legends of the Ring - Sugar Ray Robinson - Pound for Pound [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Can't think of anyone to compare with Sugar Ray Robinson. He had blazing hand and foot speed, knockout power in both hands, good defense, excellent chin, excellent conditioning. More heart than anyone in the game. He fought the best fighters in their prime- win or lose. On top of all that, he was a CLASS ACT. Cool and dignified. A must have tape for any boxing fan, trainer,or fighter. Experience the best ever "POUND FOR POUND" !!!
