This review is from: Legends For Your Love (Audio CD)
"LEGENDS: FOR YOUR LOVE" is a compilation of hits (ranging from #1 to #49) that came out from 1965 through 1980. I'm not sure what criteria Time/Life used to come up with this eclectic collection, but they are all songs that you might hear on "Classic Rock" radio.
"Mr. Tambourine Man" by The Byrds is the first song of this set. It was written and recorded by Bob Dylan, but The Byrds made it a #1 hit in 1965. By adding electric instruments to folk songs, The Byrds helped to create the folk rock genre. Blue Öyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" is next. "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)" by The Hollies follows; at #2 (in 1972), it was their biggest US hit. Next up is "All The Young Dudes" by Mott The Hoople, written by David Bowie. "Take It On The Run" by REO Speedwagon is next, followed by Kansas' "Dust In The Wind".
"Gotta Serve Somebody" (released in 1979) was Bob Dylan's first hit in three years. The song won Dylan a Grammy in 1980, and was his last hit single. Billy Joel's "Only The Good Die Young" and "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" by Meat Loaf follow. "Hold The Line", Toto's first hit single is next. Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) follows with "Evil Woman", their first worldwide hit. Continuing the "Evil" theme is Santana with "Evil Ways". That song became Santana's first top 10 hit in the US, peaking at #9. This is one of my favorite cuts on this CD... early Santana... when they were blending blues-rock, Latin rock, hard rock, and jazz to form their own unique sound.
"Hold Your Head Up" by Argent is next, followed by The Edgar Winter Group's "Frankenstein". This rock instrumental sold over a million copies and reached #1 in 1973. "I Want You To Want Me (Live)" by Cheap Trick follows, and is the only live recording on this CD. The Romantics' "What I Like About You" is next. "Lowdown" by Boz Scaggs follows. This song was Scaggs' first major hit, eventually peaking at #3. The last song in this collection is "For Your Love" by The Yardbirds (one of Eric Clapton's first bands). They were one of the pioneers of blues-rock. Ironically, "For Your Love" (a Pop song) was their first major hit in the US, and their highest charting single (#6). However, this change of musical direction outraged Clapton and lead to his departure from the band.
The liner notes for this CD are sparse. There are four pages written by Holly George-Warren (award-winning writer, editor, producer, and music consultant). What she has to say is interesting, but she only talks about 6 of the 18 songs. The sound quality is very good. Overall, this is a pretty good compilation of popular music from 1965 through 1980. In covering a 16 year span of time I don't feel that this collection is as cohesive as "
Legends: Pluggin' In Cd!" (which I reviewed previously).
