4.0 out of 5 stars Tub 4107 versus Tub 4103
I wondered whether, in recommending buying several smaller tubs rather than this larger one, other reviewers were just splitting hairs. Here's some data. Based on the Peeron.com inventories, this tub contains the following BRICKS (we're disregarding plates and sloped pieces):

1 x 1: 311
1 x 2: 376
1 x 3: 18
1 x 4: 22
1 x 6: 8

My return foray into Legos was a set that I thought might be close to what I had as a kid - a big conglomerate collection of Legos, none of which were from sets.

This Lego set drew my attention as such. 1000 bricks, and not a lot of cutesy pieces? Alright, that's for me. However, I warn you all that the draw of seeming to get so many pieces is a bit disappointing. Over 300 of them are the tiniest, one 'pip' bricks - these cannot be made into any sort of wall. About 370 are the one x two 'pip' bricks that have some utility, but not as much as many of the larger pieces.

There are no bricks larger than two x four 'pip' bricks, which I always thought were the best pieces because they built good, strong walls. There are only about 30 of these in the set, and no two x eight, like I had as a kid...essential for building a slew of ray guns or tanks over the years.

All in all, a decent set, but over 2/3 of the pieces are tiny and not bound to be as much fun.

Update - another reviewer says I overthought this. Well, when I buy something online, and don't have a good idea of what is in the contents, I would figure that when 2/3 of the pieces have low or no utility as they were so tiny would warrant a decent but not glowing review. Thus ***/*****. It's not a five star product! Come on...

4.0 out of 5 stars Tub 4107 versus Tub 4103, March 24, 2004

I wondered whether, in recommending buying several smaller tubs rather than this larger one, other reviewers were just splitting hairs. Here's some data. Based on the Peeron.com inventories, this tub contains the following BRICKS (we're disregarding plates and sloped pieces):

1 x 1: 311
1 x 2: 376
1 x 3: 18
1 x 4: 22
1 x 6: 8
2 x 2: 142
2 x 3: 20
2 x 4: 29

Tub 4103 (Make & Create: Creator Bucket, or "the smaller 200-piece tub"), on the other hand, contains:

1 x 1: 42 (126)
1 x 2: 58 (174)
1 x 3: 2 (6)
1 x 4: 8 (24)
1 x 6: 2 (2)
2 x 2: 36 (108)
2 x 3: 18 (54)
2 x 4: 16 (48)

The figure in parentheses is what you would get if you bought three 4103 tubs (currently [price] each on Amazon) instead of one 4107 ([price]). Bricks greater than 2 dots in area: 242 in the 3-tub scenario, with 48 2x4 bricks, versus 239 for Tub 4107 with 29 2x4's. So the trade off is about 70 assorted plates and sloped pieces plus all the 1x1's and 1x2's in 4107 for about 20 2x4's and 24 2x3's.

Now, here's what the other reviewers neglect to mention: each 200-piece tub ALSO contains two, count 'em, TWO black hose pieces. Any 4 year old will readily demonstrate the tremendous value of those pieces in building spaceships, "chocolate coating machines", submarines, etc.. Best to go with the three 4103's.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't let box size fool you!, December 28, 2003

Beware! We purchased this "1000-piece" box of LEGOs assuming that it was chock full of pieces. Dismay ensued when we opened the large tub only to find out that the LEGO pieces included barely covered the bottom of the container. Furthermore, the pieces that were included consisted almost entirely of the smallest LEGOs; making any serious construction next to impossible. Now we are searching for a bunch of the larger building blocks to augment this relatively worthless purchase.

I agree with everyone who says there are too many small pieces! We have 2 of these sets-just to get enough bricks to build a house, fort, castle or whatever! I'm now on the hunt for a set with larger bricks-like I had as a kid. I'm very disappointed with the sets that are out for this very reason!

For the money, buy the smaller sets. You get the same amount of larger bricks as in the big buckets, and less smaller bricks. For the same price as 1 big box, you get a lot more bigger bricks by buying 2 small boxes.

My kids have been playing with their Lego's as long as I can remember. This is a good set to start off with, for the basics, and you can always add on from there.

The previous reviewer has WAY over thought this product! This is a great set for kids--especially as a starter set. For 20 bucks, you get a ton of legos. Best of all, it keeps my 5 year old occupied for hours.
