5.0 out of 5 stars One Sweet Lego - But a Little Fragile
I have a love-hate relationship with huge Lego sets. I love their features and complexity, but I hate their price. This set is one of the more expensive Lego sets, but it is loaded with features. 5.0 out of 5 stars One Sweet Lego - But a Little Fragile, October 31, 2006
This review is from: Lego 6211 Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer (Toy)
I have a love-hate relationship with huge Lego sets. I love their features and complexity, but I hate their price. This set is one of the more expensive Lego sets, but it is loaded with features. On the other hand, it is a little fragile, even for a Lego. On the plus side, anyone having this set will be the envy of their friends, if they love Star Wars Legos.

Lego recommends this set for children ages 9 to 14. The main reason is that the set contains 1,366 pieces of various sizes, and the assembly steps require two instruction books. Once you have built this immense (nearly two foot long) kit, you have one of the largest Star Wars Lego Sets available.

The bridge opens to reveal controls and a place for two crew members, who are supposed to be Grand Moff Tarkin and an imperial officer. You can remove the bridge and its associated structure from the lower portion of the ship to then be able to open the panels in the ship to reveal the interior of the ship. The bridge portion also includes "lasers," two of which can be launched a very short distance by tapping a button. The only problem with these "lasers" is that they tend to fall out when I tilt the ship forward. The panels that open on the lower portion of the ship mount four turbo lasers that pivot and tilt with a little effort. Two lasers with limited motion are also mounted on these panels.

When you open the ship there is a lot of room available inside the ship. This space includes room for two storm troopers, Darth Vader, two royal guards, R2-D5, and a mouse droid. The interior also has a crane for removing Darth Vader's helmet, a meditation chamber for Vader, a storage location for weapons, an emperor hologram, and an escape pod that can be "launched" through an opening in the lower part of the ship.

The bridge removes reasonably easily, preferably with two hands, and feels solid when removed. The first time I picked up the entire ship I had a couple of pieces that separated, but I attached them more tightly and I have not had a problem since. However, the ship does feel a little fragile and I suspect that I will need to tighten the pieces again after some play time.

The real advantage of this Lego set is its looks. With panels closed and bridge attached this set looks powerful and sinister. Though this set is likely not amenable to being swung about, I can see setting it on a piano bench or short table and having rebel fighters zipping back and forth in an attempt to blast it.

This Star Wars Lego set is the longest set we own, and rivals the Millenium Falcon as the most impressive Star Wars Lego that we have in our collection. Only the Star Wars Legos in the Ultimate Collector Series exceed the complexity and looks of this kit. This set is an excellent addition to the collection of any Star Wars Legos.

Enjoy!

I judge legos based on two factors. Appearance and Playability

This thing gets a 5 stars in for appearance. Its massive, and it looks good. It looks like a Star Destroyer, not a cut away of a Star Destroyer or just a portion of the star destoyer. One of my biggest gripes about modern lego sets is that Lego seems to have gotten away from making their sets look like what they are supposed to be. For instance, the Harry Potter Castles are really just portions of the castles; they are cut aways. If you look at them from the side or back it ruins the effect because it doesn't look like the outside of a castle. In the 80s, the castles were cool from all angles, and to see the inner parts you had to open them up. Well, the Star Destroyer is old school like that. From the outside it looks like Star Destroyer from all angles. Too see the inner workings you open it up. Good job Lego.

The other factor I look at is playability. I give this set a 4 out of 5 in this area. The things I look for are all the ingenius little Lego mechanics, gadgets, and devices that make the sets fun to mess around with. This one has darth vadar's meditation chamber with manually operated a crane to remove his helmet, a platform where vadar talks to the emperor hologram, an escape shuttle that flies out the bottom (this works well and doesn't easily fall out on accident), a storage closet for stormtrooper rifles, and a bridge with a slick sliding motion when you open it. The way you remove the top to open it up is also pretty slick.

While this thing can be fragile in a couple places, I did not have any problems with it falling apart. I've had zero problems with the bottom falling out like other's have mentioned. I wonder whether these people took the time to make sure all the connections are tight and whether they're picking it up in a way that causes this problem. I pick mine up with two hands from the edges and its never been an issue. The two area's I've had problems with are the big top panels falling off when you open it too roughly, and the mechanism to open the bridge comming off. These are fairly minor issues that take 2 seconds to fix and they don't happen every time you open it up. You just have to be carefull. Its no worse than any other big lego set. Also, you CAN fit both the officers in the bridge.

The only reason I give this set a 4 for playability is because with a set this big, I'd like more gadgets. Some of the Harry Potter sets are really over-the-top with all the stuff you the sets do (hidden chambers, automatic doors, etc. etc.) I was expecting a little more with this one, but it still holds it down better than most sets.

Lastly, this is probably a set for older kids (or adults who still think they're kids.) Like all the big lego sets, you have to be gentle with it. Basic physics tells you that if you pick it up with one hand by putting your hand in the center of the bottom, the bottom is going to push in (especially if your hands are small.) Some younger kids might not be careful enough with it to keep it from falling apart on them. Again I didn't have a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a very impressive LEGO set; very detailed!, August 30, 2006
This review is from: Lego 6211 Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer (Toy)
I just purchased this set from Target today (31-year-old AFOL). I purchased this set because of the unique parts selection, number of minifigs and because it's the Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer!

This was a set I wanted to get after purchasing Jabba's Sail Barge. It looked very interesting and included minifigs (which the larger 10030 Ultimate Collector's Series model did not include). While not as large or detailed as the 10030 model, this model definitely has a lot of playability.

While I wasn't impressed with the firing mechanism of the blasters on the bridge or the inclusion of imperial guards, overall the model is very impressive. It took me nearly three hours to put the set together. I found the set to be very well-constructed and detailed. There is a unique mechanism to separate the different pieces of the model which I really liked. My 4-year-old son enjoyed playing with the set and it didn't break while he was playing with it.

I would highly recommend this model to anyone who wants to add a Star Wars icon to their LEGO collection. Enjoy!

I bought this set just a few days ago and I must say that while it does seem pricey, it is completely worth every penny. The amount of detail inside this fantastic set is just mind-bogging and pure genius. It took me 4 hours to build this model and that was with no breaks!!! The mini-figure selection is unique and quite generous; the coolest feature inside the ship is that you can put Darth Vader inside his meditation chamber and put his helmet on when being interrupted by Imperial minions. I feel that this set is a worthy addition to anyone's Star Wars collection, and truly gives the builder a sense of accomplishment once completed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great set but a little fragile, August 15, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Lego 6211 Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer (Toy)
I got this set for my birthday a few weeks ago. I started building the set and I was suprised at how much each part of the set requires a high level of concentration. The level of detail is truly amazing. My favorite part of the set is the turbines on the rear. It seems pricey, but if you have 100 dollars in your pocket, this is a high reccomendation. The only problem that I encountered was that the set is slightly fragile. To some of the kids, especially the one who said that this set is evil, you probably built it wrong. Some flaws in the set are sometimes in the most obvious places.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Star Wars and Lego fans., June 25, 2006

This set is incredible. So much detail that a collector would love it and huge amounts of mindless fun for everyone. This set requires lots of time ( took me 6 hours but I'm a slow builder ) and is well worth some frustartion you go through. The bags are numbered so after one part is complete you go onto another bag so looking for that one tiny piece isn't that hard. Another added bonus is the 9 minifigures you get which well adds some force to your Imperial army. The only downfall to this set is that it is fragile at some points. The bottom of the ship is fragile, if your grasping it from there and then lifting it, well it breaks. So what I did, is added some more pieces to the bottom to make it more durable. Over all the biggest and greatest Lego set I ever built. HAVE FUN!!!

We just bought this at a TRU store. My 10 year son is in the process of building it this Memorial weekend. He's relatively new to Legos and this is his second large set to build. He built the Millenium Falcon last Christmas. This Star Destroyer looks much easier to build than the Falcon. The plastic baggies that hold the pieces are numbered. That makes it easier to find the tiny parts. It was a challenge last time to find tiny parts in so many different baggies. So far, he's having a lot of fun.

This was a great Lego set. My 6 year old earned it as a reading award in our family. He built it with the help of his dad. He's an expert Lego builder, but this one took a lot of time and seemed more difficult than most b/c it is fragile. The main objection I have with it still is that he cannot really play with it as he does his other Lego sets, even comparably sized sets with a similar number of pieces, b/c it constantly is falling apart. Pieces are always breaking off, and the entire thing frequently just collapses. This makes it not fun, and he rarely plays with it, but it is still in a plastic bin we have for every Lego set, and he is proud to have it and to have built it.

While you might think this is excessively expensive, when you factor in design and the task of doing it, I think this is a great deal. My son, who is 7, got this for christmas and sat down and worked out almost the whole thing in 6 hours of intense concentration. Beyond the discipline and his pride in the result, the process trains his eye for observation and his hands for precision. For whatever reason, this kind of building has become something of an obsession in him that we want to feed and we hope to build on with tougher projects in the future. Ok, this is a bit canned and you have to follow the steps very carefully, but it is a big step. A year ago, he started on ships with 40 pieces, so this is a progression to 1366!

I think the one drawback is that these are quite fragile, so you can't play with them in a rough way. Thus, they are like models, though he and his sister will takes pieces and characters out of it for their games.

Warmly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, January 3, 2007
This review is from: Lego 6211 Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer (Toy)
I really like this set. The size, almost 2 feet and weight around 5lbs may make it harder to play with for a kid, but I love it. I took the liberty of adding a lot more guns to it. The look of this model is very imposing and the interior offers a modest amount of things to do. I also found the durability was greatly increased when I filled in the bottom of the ship with the biggest flat pieces I could fit. This of course is only an option for those who have a bunch of legos from their childhood like I do. If you want it to stay together well, firmly press all pieces together as you go and use two hands to hold it!
