I agree with the other reviewer - this is a worthless product. I've attempted to load on two different computers, and the software fails to initiate setup every time. My kids were pretty disappointed.

Great job, Lego! (not)

When you first install the game on XP SP2, it does not recognize that the CD is in the computer and it keeps asking for it. The patch eliminates this error. It has good 3D graphics and is not violent like other chess games. My son likes battle chess, but its so small on a modern PC and the audio doesn't work. This lego chess game is a good beginners chess set with fun graphics kids will like.

It's a great value at just under (....) with shipping.

1.0 out of 5 stars Completely Useless. Would not run., February 15, 2007
By
The "Create a Review" combobox did not provide a "zero" star rating or I would have picked that one. I'm in agreement with these other reviews. My wife bought this game at Christmas for our son. I'm a software engineer with a Masters degree and I could not get this game to execute. The Lego website has a FAQ that says you must first run the "configuration" program and then load the actual Chess play program from there. In all instances, I get an error dialog telling me that there is no CD in the CD drive. Lego needs to make a patch available immediately for this bug. There's no excuse for software with such an obvious bug to be made available to consumers. You're telling me this bug never manifested itself once during their beta/integration testing?

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Action, Too Little Talk, March 30, 2009
This review is from: Lego Chess (CD-ROM)
I got this program to run just fine with (and even without) the patch. My problems with it are that it's too juvenile in its approach to be a useful teaching tool. The major flaw is that after every capture, there's a cute Lego video which is sure to delight the 7 - 10 year old who likes cartoons. However, if you have a 7 - 10 year old who really wants to learn chess (and like me, you don't play well enough to teach strategy), then the videos become a real hindrance, particularly when the computer opponent captures a piece. As soon as his piece starts to move, the video pops up and you can't see which of your pieces has been taken. Adding to the frustration is the fact that there is no move history to refer to to find out what just happened! Nor is there an assets list that shows your relative remaining strength.

There are a whole bunch of tutorials and exercises, but you can't refer to those without resigning your current game, so it's very hard for a beginner to get help in any particular situation without losing!

All in all, it's an amusing little video game, but not a great resource for learning how to play chess.

BTW, the $44 asking price on this particular listing is way too much. The A to Z Marketplace has it for around $8, which is about right for something like this.

My son loves this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help please, December 10, 2011
This review is from: Lego Chess (CD-ROM)
I, as do a lot of other people, get the ''insert CD-rom'' message while the CD is already in as well. Now there's a lot of people whose problem has been solved by downloading the patch, but the problem is: the website doesn't exist anymore. Whenever I click the link I get an error saying that the HTTP wasn't found. So I guess my question is: Are there any other websites from which I could download the patch?

This Lego Chess was a great deal! My seven-year-old son can spend hours playing this if I'd let him. My husband enjoys it also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great once I installed the patch from selectsoft, March 2, 2009
This review is from: Lego Chess (CD-ROM)
My sons love other Lego software products. I was eager to try this one. But I was blocked by the Insert CD error message. But a quick internet search turned up a patch I needed to install (search for: lego chess insert CD). Now it works great.

I'm a software engineer too, just like one of the other reviewers. But finding this fix just takes some common sense. No need for a master's degree.
