5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun, a really well done set

3.0 out of 5 stars Know what you are buying
Whenever I buy a Lego set for my son I consider three things. First of all, the build: How fun will it be to build the first time? Second, I consider the playability: What's fun about this set? Then I consider the pieces of the set: Will it still be fun when half of the pieces are lost in the sofa and he's building his own castles from what's left (this kind of...

Looking at a picture of this set isn't enough to grasp all the cool features. But I'm getting ahead of myself. You get three minifigs here: Headmaster Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall, and Harry! Minerva McGonagall is a new minifig in Lego form, she has a green outfit, complete with a unique sloped piece to act as a skirt. My only complaint about the dress is that the bottom pops off easily. The unique aspects of this set are great, it fits in perfectly with any other Hogwarts sets and the area around the staircase can close and stay closed. Before you can finish saying, "Lemondrops" you're ready to see Dumbledore! There are some great semi-transparent pieces that act as stained glass -- bluish purple ones for the set's secret back door and red & geen ones for a window in the actual office. In the very top of the tower there is a mechanism so that you can turn the swirling galaxy from behind. To sum it all up, there are a lot of moving and hinged areas that make this set a lot of fun to build and even more fun to play with. It isn't as simple as it looks, trust me. It took me about an hour to build. One recommendation I'd make is to build it on a table. Set #4729 is 446 pieces, and is worth every penny of the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good Harry Potter Lego, December 30, 2002
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

Legos typically make enjoyable toy kits. However, some are better than average, and this one is such. The greatest fun comes from the moving elements and imagination that went into the design of the toy. A word of caution too. This kit is for a more experienced builder of Legos, so some children at the lower end of the recommended age range may need mom or dad's help.

One of the more fascinating features is a spiral staircase that swivels and collapses so that the toy can be closed. I also like the locking arrangement with scorpion handle that locks the outer walls into place. Another novel feature is a rotating mechanism that can be moved from outside the toy to rotate a disk with images of stars and galaxies on it.

There is also a swiveling wall that has a key on the back side, a book that can hold a plastic envelope, and a mail box that has a slot for the same type of envelope. I'm probably neglecting a moving feature, there were so many in this set.

You also get three figures. An outstanding representation of Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall, and (another) Harry Potter. My one objection is that every Harry Potter set seems to include another Harry Potter. I understand that someone might purchase only one Lego Harry Potter set, and thus would need one of these Harry Potters, but we are on our way to having a football team's worth of Harry's, for both offense and defense. Ah well. I guess with that many Harry's no matter how many get vacuumed up you'll always have one.

I enjoy toys that have many features. This particular set is a bit on the pricier side, but for that price you get a lot of value. This set makes a good center piece for many of the smaller Harry Potter sets available. This set is also somewhat challenging to build, and will take an hour or more of your time. You should have a large flat area to build it on, such as a table.

I consider this set essential for a collector of Legos or Harry Potter. Definitely one of the better Harry Potter sets, and one of the best Legos sets we have ever purchased. I give this Lego kit 5 stars for fun because of all the motion involved. 5 stars for educational value because of the difficulty of assembly. And 5 stars for durability given that Legos are generally durable within the limits of their design. A very good value!

4.0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to the Lego lineup, November 25, 2003

This was a joy to construct! The Harry Potter motif pieces are a great addition to the Lego line, and this represents a compromise of recent models having large pieces that 'construct' themselves. I really liked the innovative spiral staircase, and look forward to adding these pieces to my existing castle collections to bring out some really creative buildings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ok, I'm hooked, August 6, 2003

On a whim, I bought my 6-year old son "Escape from Privet Drive" because it was on sale at 40% off. We put it together and now we're both hooked. Went out and immediately purchased Dumbledor's office. Wow, is all I can say. I am not a Lego enthusiast, but can say with newbie authority that this set is awesome. Love the spiral staircase and the locking door. Just purchased the castle, Hogwarts Express, and the Chamber all for the holidays. My only complaint is that we now own too many Harrys and the sets tend to crumble if small hands push too hard -- leading to some tears. Other than that, he has been playing with this stuff non-stop for four days now. Happy Building!

My 7 year old just received this for his birthday and we spent about 5 evenings putting it together--and BOY DID WE HAVE FUN!!! The design of this particular lego toy is fantastic--may elements to delight the young and old. I've done a lot of these legos and this is the first time I've come across "gears"--I won't reveal the secret, but it was really fun once we got it all put together. Highly recommended. We finished about a week ago, and my son's been playing with it every night. Its worth the investment!

This is one of those way above average LEGO sets. It has many things to play with. It is as much fun to build as it is to play with. My only complaint is that McGonagall's feet snap off too easily. In other words this set is a MUST BUY!!!

Whenever I buy a Lego set for my son I consider three things. First of all, the build: How fun will it be to build the first time? Second, I consider the playability: What's fun about this set? Then I consider the pieces of the set: Will it still be fun when half of the pieces are lost in the sofa and he's building his own castles from what's left (this kind of versitility is why I buy my son Legos)?
This set is really fun on the first day. While it only took us a few minutes to build (there are lots of large pieces), my son really enjoyed acing out scenes from the movie. The following weeks however, were not quite as good. The srength of the Harry Potter Legos is that they really resemble the places in the films. However, the consequense of this is a lot of peices that are specific to Harry's world. The prblem with this is that my son's original castles become less his, and more Harry Potter's-- the pieces really do not work well in other environments. Since we bought a few Harry Potter sets my son has asked that we not get any more, he says they are "too much like the movie". So I guess it's fun for a while, but don't expect the fun to move much past the directions.

As a Harry Potter fan, I started buying Legos for the first time in years; I still remember when they didn't have specific kits. I was so impressed by my first Harry Potter Legos that I've collected quite a magical landscape by now. I loved this kit--it has a lot of interesting elements, like the swinging back door and revolving bookshelf, and I have found that its parts can be well-used to make up good alternative buildings for those of us who like to create models rather than build them exactly as instructed. This set and the Hogwarts Castle are my favorite Lego sets thus far.
