5.0 out of 5 stars Great set, fun for kids & parents alike
This is a fantastic set -- ideal for the youngster who has long interest in the traditional brightly-colored Duplo sets, but is still a bit young to manage standard Lego sets. This is a fantastic set -- ideal for the youngster who has long interest in the traditional brightly-colored Duplo sets, but is still a bit young to manage standard Lego sets. I got this for my four-year-old, and he was able to assemble the castle shown in the picture above by following the instructions, with very little help. We then had fun playing with it together for a while, and then he tore it down and made up his own castle. With the elements in this set, you can make a wide variety of structures, from wide and flat to very tall towers. We have repeated this build-play-destroy cycle many times since then.

The set has a lot of really neat pieces in it, including a catapult, a portcullis that slides up and down in grooved blocks, a stonework arch, and some small plates with handles that can be used to make a drawbridge or dump a pot. The pot can also be used as a cooking pot, which goes well with the round table. There's also a neat ladder that hooks into a holder so that it's not constantly falling out of place.

My only disappointment with this set is that it's pretty violent for its age range -- all four figures have angry faces, and it includes swords, axes, and a mace. That was unnecessary; kids this age are happy just playing visit-the-castle. But I started play-acting the knights with good attitudes, and my son accepted it despite the mean faces, so this is a minor drawback.

As value goes, this set is hard to beat. The castles you build with it are enormous -- a regular Lego set this size would be $200. And most of these pieces are rare and highly valuable in the Lego aftermarket (just try to find someone selling gray Duplo bricks, for example).

Overall, these new Duplo Knight sets are a real winner -- way more fun than the standard Duplo sets, but big, sturdy, and easy for small hands to use. I highly recommend any of them, but if you're going to get one to start with, make it this one.

I bought this toy for my 4 year old son because he loves knights and castles and I did not want to pay the Playmobil price nor do we have the imaginext or Fisher Price versions available wehre I live in Canada now. I also have a 2 and a half year old.

My sons are not avid lego users. They have only played with the mega blocks until now. This was VERY hard for them to put together. I thought the instructions were a bit vague and kind of hard to follow for my 33 year old eyes and I like putting things together for the kids. The set comes with a horse, 4 knights and armor and shields and weapons for all of them. You can put together three different towers and then kind of put them all close together to make the larger configuration that appears on the box. However, they do not all attach togehter. You can also build whatever you like. it has neat parts and cool pieces and features. My kids love the knights and the weapons and the horse and the catapult. However, they keep knocking it apart and then I have to come put it back together for them to play with. This is expected with Legos, but I thought with an age range of 3-6 on the box, it would be a bit easier to assemble. My kids just get frustrated when they move it and a few pieces pull out and they don't know where or how to put them back together. My kids just want to pretend play castle and knights.

Bottom line is this, in my opinion, if your kids love legos and they love to use their imagination to make different configurations and then pretend play with the accessories, this is for them. If your kids are harder on toys, don't have the patience for putting things back together and want to just pretend play, then this is not for your kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Years of enjoyment, October 18, 2005

We purchased this for our 3 year old son for Christmas. He has not stopped playing with this toy since he received it and it is now October. He enjoys is so much we ended up buying all the other Duplo castles pieces(4779, 4775 and 4776). They make a great set and have let his imagination expand. It is not just castles anymore but boats, car garages and zoos all made out of the castle pieces. That is what is great about Lego.

We have a 2 year boy and a 1 year old girl and they all play with the pieces constantly. Our 1 year old daughter enjoys connecting the pieces and the duplo's size makes it possible.

The original castle in the plans and on the box picture is difficult for young children to put together. However, once your children start making their own designs that is where the fun begins.

We live in Vienna Austria. I noticed the other day that there is a new castle that uses black duplo blocks. The Knights are also different. It is bigger than 4777. It doesn't appear to be on Amazon since Lego's are the one thing we get sooner than the U.S. Anyway the point is Lego seems to be continuing to expand this set and that is a good thing.

We got this for our son's 4th birthday because he's been playing with his other Duplo's a lot. I was a little sceptical because the picture didn't look like there was much to it for the price, but I was surprised at how much was actually in there when we unpacked it on his birthday.

The entire family including grandma and grandpa had a blast putting this castle together. Pretty soon we had other toys in there that had to be protected from the bad guys.

It didn't stay together more than a week. My son figured out that he could take it all apart and build different things with it and has made all kinds of things from houses to "airplanes" with the different parts.

He also got the black dragon with this from his grandparents and that is a must have addition for any child who loves the whole castle theme. What's a castle without a dragon anyway?

The only downside to this is that he's tried to put it back together the way it is meant to be and that proved to be impossible for him, he needs help with that.

This is also very durable, he's thrown pieces and put them in the catapult to hit the bad guys, and a few pieces have been stepped on by my husband and me because he leaves them everywhere, and nothing has broken so far.

Overall if your child loves to build things and use his/her imagination this is a great toy. But if they get frustrated easily this is not for them.

The price is a little steep but that's normal for anything from lego, I thought it was definitely worth spending the money.

I bought this used after much internet stocking. Wonderful. My almost four year old loves Duplo blocks and this is a great addition. More complex than the duplo blocks currently on the market and absolutely at his skill level, with some assistance. Our set is many years old now but still in great condition. Duplo blocks last forever.

Yeah.

My kid's love this toy. A little difficult for my younger children to put together but once together they love to play with it! All my children age 1 to 10 (five in all) have enjoyed playing with this.

My son got this for Christmas from his grandparents along with the dragon tower and the seperate duplo knight. At first he spent weeks just playing with the characters and didn't bother much with the castle. Now he plays with all of it and enjoys creating his own castle not just what was on the picture box. He had mom and grandparents make the castle for him a number of times before he attempted to build it but now that he realizes it is easy to build and rebuild he makes his own all the time. He has played with this toy every day since Christmas morning and by far surpasses his interest in any other toy that he has. I highly recommend this toy for 3yrs and up. My son is 3.5 and is completely thrilled with it and asked for more pieces to go with it for his birthday. The downside was the angry faces and weapons that came with the knights but we talk all the time about castles and what exactly knights do...that "fighting" is only part of the picture and he has a great imagination for rescue scenarios and the whole works so it worked out fine in the end. It is great for pretend play and imagination as well as coordination in building things with their hands. My son is so proud of his creations that he makes. It was well worth investing in!

I bought this set (and the dragon set) for my four year olds birthday. He loves it! At first it was a toy that my son and I would enjoy together, we would build it together, then he would play and tear it apart. Now he likes to try and follow the easy instructions to build it himself and create other towers. It is very durable, my 1 year old also likes to tear it apart, and still after several months, no broken parts. One thing to keep in mind is that they give you the exact number of legos to make the castle, if you lose even one piece it can ruin the building fun. (so far we have only lost one of the doors). well worth the money to see your child create, build and play make believe!
