Editorial Reviews

Review

This thick hardcover book is packed with text and illustrations, the sheer measure of which admittedly took the author nearly a quarter century to research and compile. The book is an indispensable aid for properly identifying pottery, porcelain, and clay pieces. The various manufacturer listings contain paragraphs outlining the history of each company as well as interesting "insider" information. Both the novice and veteran collector can ID their merchandise quickly and easily. -K. DeCiantis

About the Author

Lois Lehner graduated from Ohio State University, taugh speech and English for eighteen years in Delaware County, Ohio, where she was born and lived her sixty years. Even while teaching, Lois collected old and rare books. The Lehner farm family joined the bottle craze, even to digging dumps on neighboring farms and in surrounding towns. From books to bottles-to glass and pottery, her interest in antiques continued to grow. Lois Lehner passed away October 2007.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best identification book in my library!!!, May 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lehner's Encyclopedia Of US Marks On Pottery, Porcelain Clay (Hardcover)
This is by far the book I reach for time and time again when I am trying to identify a piece of pottery. Full of useful information and history of the company. This is not meant to be a price guide and it isn't. I have found obscure marks on items in this book when the information hasn't been in any other book. Truly a bible for the collector of pottery made in the USA. Easy to use. Well organized. Super book!

5.0 out of 5 stars And So It Was Done, September 9, 2000

Years ago I hunted high and low for a book on American ceramic wares, a genre who's time I saw closing fast. It was suggested once that I write one. I am glad I didn't take the challenge as my work would surly have paled severely in contrast to this marvelous, all inclusive work. Lois Lehner gives the subject the depth, scope and respect it deserves. This is 'the book' on American marks on pottery and porcelain its authority is never questioned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly stunning work, May 16, 2000
This review is from: Lehner's Encyclopedia Of US Marks On Pottery, Porcelain Clay (Hardcover)
Many books use the word 'encyclopedia' in their title, but few really deserve it. This one most certainly does. A titanic reference of pottery marks and company histories that virtually never fails to identify a piece of U.S. china. The variety of marks within each company, and the historical detail, make this both a valuable reference and an interesting book to page through.
