The book is a great resource for learning biochemistry at a fast pace. I'm using it in my Fundamental of Biological Design course, in which we go over a variety of related fields at breakneck speed (3 weeks of biochemistry, 2 weeks of engineering, 1 week of imaging, 3 weeks of genetics, etc..). I had never taken a course in biochemistry during my undergraduate career and this book has proven invaluable in my PhD career.

I would suggest this book to anybody who wants to learn biochemistry at a discussable level, quickly.

This book is fairly straightforward and easy to follow. I had no difficulty in understanding the topics, and really enjoyed using this book for my biochemistry course. It is almost identical to the 6th edition of Lehninger's, and can be used in place of that text. If you are looking to save some money, purchase this edition. The homework problems in the back of the chapters are also identical.

At times the text doesn't go into enough detail on some examples, but the breadth and clarity of the whole makes up for this in every way.

The format could be improved. The explanations were not well stated and didn't seem to follow a particular order. I was able to get the information out of my molecular textbook, which was more clear and concise. If it is not a required text for the class, don't bother getting this one.

Let's not kid ourselves, Biochemistry is no walk in the park. It sucks. Even if you like chemistry and biology, which I do, it is still a difficult subject when you are moving through the material for the first time. The book has been really helpful in supplementing the lectures. However, I do find that at times the text is very dense, and can sometimes be misleading. It usually takes a few passes on some of the concepts before I can actually grasp what the book is saying and how it fits into the larger picture of the system being examined. It is a good book, but the organization in some areas seems strange.

This books is easy to understand and uses a ground up approach that reviews gen chem concepts you need for biochemistry as it goes along. I own the third edition and, although I have only gone through the first 9 chapters, I can say that it's the same as the new edition with only a couple illustrations and numbers changed (I haven't compared the end of chapter problems). Good book but save your money and buy an older edition!
