Product Description

Product Description

The LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. is a further revised version of this popular wide-angle lens for the Leica M rangefinder system. Thanks to the latest developments in the fields of optics and precision engineering, the new 35mm lens sets a whole new standard in the fast wide-angle lens portfolio. Whether it's a matter of selective focus in the close-up range, high-contrast available light applications or landscape shots with immense depth of field, the lens delivers persuasive arguments in any situation.

In comparison with its predecessor, the new LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. now incorporates a floating element: the lenses behind the aperture blades are constructed as a floating group that changes its position relative to the front lens group during focusing to ensure that the LEICA SUMMILUX-M 1:1.4/35 mm ASPH. achieves outstanding imaging performance at closer focusing distances. Another new feature is a full-metal, rectangular, screw-mount lens hood that contributes significantly to the compact dimensions of the lens. The optical design of the new LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. has also been optimised for use on the digital Leica M models. It reveals the full extent of its outstanding performance particularly when mounted on the LEICA M9. The LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. also delivers excellent results on analogue M models and is destined to become an indispensible component of every M system outfit. Even wide open, the LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. reveals performance characteristics without precedent in the field of compact 35 mm lenses: outstanding imaging performance over the entire focus range, from infinity to minimum focus; excellent contrast, even in the finest structures; superb rendition of detail across the entire image field; good field flattening and, stopped down to f2 and onwards, almost complete freedom from coma effects.

From the Manufacturer

In the M-System, the 35 mm lenses are the most popular . The combination of moderate wide angle characteristics paired with natural dimensions makes this focal length versatile.

The optical design of the Leica Summilux-M 35mm/f1.4 ASPH has bee optimised for the use with either the digital Leica M cameras or the traditional analogue cameras for stunning results. In particular, this lens shows its full potential with the Leica M9.

The Leica Summilux-M 35 mm/f1.4 ASPH is equipped with a Floating Element, which keeps the outstanding imaging performance at a very high level even at close focusing distance. The new patented, rectangular, full-metal lens hood makes the lens more compact than its predecessor

This lens is as sharp as it's always been advertised. I have a 2+ year old M9 and regardless of whether I focus close or to infinity, this lens produces images as sharp as my 50 Lux (and at the wide end maybe a little bit sharper). If 35mm is attractive to you, then this is the lens you've got to have (if price is not a deterrent).

I've owned a ton of 35mm lenses. Ultimately this is my favorite one to use on the Leica M (240) because it is fast, sharp, has outstanding build quality, and relatively small.

There are some downsides to be aware of: There is some off focus curvature that affects sharpness across a flat target. Google Tim Ashley's review for examples and explanation. Bokeh wide open, especially in the corners, can be harsh; certainly harsher than either version of the Voigtlander 35/1.2. Smooths out nicely as you stop down. There is a touch of barrel distortion, hardly worth mentioning, but noticeable if you are used to a distortion-free lens like the Zeiss ZM 2/35 Biogon. There is also some noticeable longitudinal CA though nothing unusual.

With such a long list of negatives, why 5 stars? For starters, none of the Voigtlander 35mm lenses I have tried (35/1.7, 35/1.2, 35/1.4) are as sharp, and the Voigtlander 35/1.2 is quite a bit larger/heavier. The Zeiss ZM 35mm lenses aren't as fast. Basically this lens has the best balance of features for me.

I broke down and bought a Leica M-E when I realized my photo printer was much sharper than my point-and-shoot camera. The reason for the Leica was to get the sharpest images with THIS world-class lens. I have only been playing for a week, but this lens is awesome!! I'm sure my photos will get better as I learn the Leica's quirks, but after a half hour with the manual, I have been shooting images with mind-blowing contrast range and sharpness that allows fairly tightly cropped images to be printed at 8x10 inches and still look stunning.

I know this lens is ridiculously expensive, but it so far exceeds my expectations (which were high due to the on-line hype) that if razor sharp images, especially in low light, are important to you, I'd suggest saving your pennies and putting this lens on your wish list. It delivers on every ounce of hype!

The perfect lens when you need to use just one. The throw on the focus is just right, the rings are all just tight enough without becoming difficult, and the optical qualities are just perfect from the smallest to largest apertures. The only complaint might be cost, but when you are buying Leica, you should know what you are getting into
