MORE COMPACT, HIGHER PERFORMANCE
In comparison with its predecessor, the new LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. now incorporates a floating element: the lenses behind the aperture blades are constructed as a floating group that changes its position relative to the front lens group during focusing to ensure that the LEICA SUMMILUX-M 1:1.4/35 mm ASPH. achieves outstanding imaging performance at closer focusing distances. Another new feature is a full-metal, rectangular, screw-mount lens hood that contributes significantly to the compact dimensions of the lens. The optical design of the new LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. has also been optimised for use on the digital Leica M models. It reveals the full extent of its outstanding performance particularly when mounted on the LEICA M9. The LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. also delivers excellent results on analogue M models and is destined to become an indispensible component of every M system outfit. Even wide open, the LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. reveals performance characteristics without precedent in the field of compact 35 mm lenses: outstanding imaging performance over the entire focus range, from infinity to minimum focus; excellent contrast, even in the finest structures; superb rendition of detail across the entire image field; good field flattening and, stopped down to f2 and onwards, almost complete freedom from coma effects.
From the Manufacturer

There are some downsides to be aware of: There is some off focus curvature that affects sharpness across a flat target. Google Tim Ashley's review for examples and explanation. Bokeh wide open, especially in the corners, can be harsh; certainly harsher than either version of the Voigtlander 35/1.2. Smooths out nicely as you stop down. There is a touch of barrel distortion, hardly worth mentioning, but noticeable if you are used to a distortion-free lens like the Zeiss ZM 2/35 Biogon. There is also some noticeable longitudinal CA though nothing unusual.
With such a long list of negatives, why 5 stars? For starters, none of the Voigtlander 35mm lenses I have tried (35/1.7, 35/1.2, 35/1.4) are as sharp, and the Voigtlander 35/1.2 is quite a bit larger/heavier. The Zeiss ZM 35mm lenses aren't as fast. Basically this lens has the best balance of features for me.
I know this lens is ridiculously expensive, but it so far exceeds my expectations (which were high due to the on-line hype) that if razor sharp images, especially in low light, are important to you, I'd suggest saving your pennies and putting this lens on your wish list. It delivers on every ounce of hype!
