Product Description

The Leica 90mm f/2.5 Summarit-M Lens is a fast telephoto lens that is part of the Summarit-M class of affordable rangefinder lenses. This lens is ideal for portraiture and photojournalism, or for quick snapshots when you want to take pictures inconspicuously from a distance.

Summarit-M lenses are designed to offer traditional Leica optical and mechanical excellence, while positioned at a price level below the current M ASPH lenses. With a maximum aperture of f/2.5, and by applying classical and proven spherical lens designs, these lenses provide excellent quality. These features also result in a very compact design. This lens has been updated with the "6-bit" coding, which allows the digital M camera to read this information optically and to identify which lens is being used. The camera can then (optionally) apply a "final stage" software based vignetting correction

5.0 out of 5 stars Leica's Best in its new Summarit-M Lens Line, December 14, 2007
I had the chance to handle this fine M-mount rangefinder camera portrait (short telephoto) lens at this year's Photo Plus East and came away quite impressed with it. It focuses nearly as quickly as my APO-Summicron-M lens, but, better yet, offers a level of a performance that is as good as, if not better, than Leica's top-of-the-line fast 90mm lens at a significant savings. I saw some superb demonstration photographs taken with this lens, including a fine black and white portrait that is notable for its rich tonality (vivid blacks and whites, with very high contrast). If there is only one negative feature that I don't like about the 90mm Summarit-M lens, then it is this: it lacks a built-in lens hood (The lens hood must be purchased separately too.). Those in search of a cheaper alternative to the 90mm APO-Summicron lens won't be disappointed at all.

I primarily shoot with a 50mm 1.4 Summilux and 35 f2 Summarit. I wanted something with a little more reach, but did not want to spend the money for an f/2 Leica. This lens is perfect. Nice weight, balances well with my M9-P, and MP. Quality built. Only down side is that you need to buy the lens hood separately. Sharp rendition of images with very nice bokeh when you shoot wide open. A light weight lens that performs, and hits a very nice price point in the Leica world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Lens, September 21, 2011

I was a bit concerned after reading some not so great comments about this lens. In fact, many suggested to buy a used 90mm Elmarit instead. I am sorry, but I do not agree. This is a fantastic lens. Some have also criticized the construction quality of the lens... here again, I must disagree. This lens is all Leica.. in construction and in image quality. In fact, I like the rubber focus ring. And lets be realistic... one buys a Leica lens for its image quality... and here this lens excels. The only thing missing is the built in hood... all else is great.
