Leica presents an exclusive special edition of the Leica D-LUX 4 Titanium. A further premium quality camera edition in an elegant finish. The Leica D-LUX 4 Titanium now joins the special titanium limited editions of the Leica M7 and Leica MP and a titaniumcoloured Leica M6 TTL as the first Leica digital camera with the satin finish of anodised titanium. This special version of the Leica D-LUX 4 Titanium is limited to only 10,000 cameras worldwide. From January 2009, the camera will be available in a set together with a premium quality, titanium-coloured leather case.

The silver-grey of the Leica D-LUX 4 Titanium has an unmistakeably exclusive look that makes this special edition an elegant collector's piece with its own particular expression of luxury. The camera body of the titanium edition has a particularly luxurious look and feel, but still remains light and extremely resilient. Thus, the Leica D-LUX 4 Titanium has a metal body that has been constructed with the same precision and attention to detail as the standard models, and the exclusive use of the highest quality materials in its construction guarantees users absolute reliability in every situation.

The technical features of the Leica D-LUX 4 Titanium are identical to those of the standard models. For instance, the wide range of accessories for the Leica D-LUX 4, such as the handgrip, the auxiliary finder or the Leica CF 22 compact flash unit (available from February 2009) are all fully compatible with the titanium edition.

The high-aperture professional lens

The Leica DC Vario-Summicron lens 1:2.0-2.8/5.1-12.8 ASPH is a high-aperture lens for digital compact cameras that allows the real enthusiast to work with an open shutter. Its high speed makes the Leica D-LUX 4 ideal for available light exposures. Whether in poor light or for selective use of field depth, the lens of the Leica D-LUX 4 gives the photographer scope for highly individual picture composition. The aspherical zoom lens with a focusing range of 24-60 mm opens up new creative options in reportage photography.

The lens design consists of eight elements, of which four are aspherical. These are matched individually to the camera sensor, working in harmony with the electronics and software, to produce stunningly brilliant pictures in true-to-life colors.

Powerful sensor

At a standard resolution of 10.1 megapixels, the overlarge size of the 1/1.63" CCD image sensor increases image quality distinctly. The smallest details of the subject are reproduced exactly. The D-Lux 4 can take photos in all three formats (4:3/3:2/16:9) to suit the particular recording or playback situation. On the 3" LCD monitor with a resolution of 460,000 pixels, pictures can be viewed and assessed in excellent quality before and after they are taken. Leica Camera AG has developed its own unique colour matching, contrast and picture definition profile which produces digital characteristics complimentary to Leica M film photography.

More creative possibilities

The ergonomic layout of controls and intuitive operating system make it a pleasure to handle the D-Lux 4. Focus, shutter speed, stops and exposure override can all be set manually with the joystick giving the real enthusiast scope for highly individual picture composition. Of course you can also use the intelligent automatic mode: Depending on the subject and photographic situation, the camera automatically selects the best mode from Scene Select, either macro, landscape, portrait, night portrait, or night scene. The professional software Capture One 4 (RAW data converter) makes sure that the RAW data supplied by the CCD sensor is "processed" in optimum quality. Data recording can be in Fine, Standard, RAW or combinations. The D-Lux 4 is also prepared for photos in HDTV format with a HD port for TV connection.

Expandable, just like a small system camera

The D-Lux 4 is a real Leica, not just in its design, its looks, and its performance, but also its being the first digital compact camera that can be used with an extensive range of accessories - just like a system camera. That means even more photographic possibilities with the camera that can claim to be "son of M8".

Leica craftsmanship is undeniable...and if you are reading this review, you probably know that already. This TITANIUM edition is spectacular, even by Leica standards. The D-Lux 4 is a truly great point and shoot, with all the freeedom one would need to control the image being recorded. The TITANIUM version is unique as only 10,000 are ever going to be made and for $995, one has the chance of owning a Leica limited edition at a fairly affordable price point. This camera is chic, stylish and a gotta have for all those people who want to own the best of the best! The only difference between the TITANIUM and regular version is its collectibility...to me that was worth the extra $300. EVERYONE asks to see it and hold it - it is that cool looking! Enjoy!!!

Sure you can weigh the pros and cons of buying this Leica D-Lux 4 Titanium or saving money and getting it's cheaper counterpart. If you have the money...just do it...splurge a little, you won't be disappointed. Filled out the warranty online, which gives me 3 years total. Updated to the newest firmware 1.20 which was very easy using my SDHC card. The average person doesn't know the beauty of this camera, but those who know will instantly praise this beauty. Beautiful pictures and surprisingly really good HD video in 16:9 aspect ratio. There are many settings that are easily accessible with the quick user interface. A large and bright LCD makes taking pictures very easy. Compared pictures with this and my fathers Olympus, this blows it away, the light that this lens brings in is truly amazing. With it's matching case this is CLASS all the way around, you will get compliments from those that know.

Looks Amazing and build quality is perfect. Even in snapshot mode the photos all look very good.

A few minor issues though.
1. You'll have to get a cord for the lens cap. Putting it in your pocket every time becomes a hassle.
2. When shooting video, the camera will constantly adjust the exposure. So if you pan across an area with shade and sun it will go up and down as you pass different areas. This may just be a setting I have not figured out yet though.


Apart from that this camera is perfect. I haven't even used my SLR in months.
