These jars are better than I expected and are gorgeous filled with pickles or jam. When the jars seal they make a loud thunk sound that makes me jump every time. The lids are the same size as your standard wide mouth jars, so you can use these jars again and again for canning without special ordering Leifheit lids. I have given my preserves as gifts in these jars and everyone loves them!

I was looking for a preserving jar that would transcend the old pints and show off brandied peaches, pears and this seasons pickles with novelty. At the same time I wanted to avoid some of the pitfalls of some creative European designs--- jars,sealing rubbers and lids that are difficult to keep sterile in the canning process and lids that require something odd sized be purchased for reuse.
These Leifheit jars have a great look! They draw many comments and compliments and the lids can be replaced for the next canning cycle by common stock sold most anywhere.

I wanted a jar that was worthy of gift giving. My sister-in-law taught me how to make plum jam this summer and I thought it would make great Christmas gifts. I chose these jars for their unique shape and charm. I was not disappointed when they arrived. A bit of raffia or ribbon tied around the lid with a homemade tag attached and you have a thoughtful and charming gift.

I love the look of these 16oz Leifheit jars but only use them for gift giving because even with free shipping they are so expensive. Compare plain old 16oz Mason Jars at $8.99 for TWELVE jars verses Leifheit 16oz jars at $15.99 for only SIX jars. That's $32 for TWELVE 16oz jars of Leifheit Brand which is more than three and half times the price for the mason jars. So for me, I use the ugly Mason jars but for gift giving these Leifheit jars are really nice.

I have had to revise this review after a concerned consumer informed me that the product is NOT 100% BPA free. My apologies to anyone who may have purchased based on my review. I only used the information that I obtained in the the article referenced below. I DID contact the company to question if the product was or was not BPA free. They NEVER responded. The company's lack of response leads me to believe that this product is NOT BPA free.

I'll pay a little more if it means BPA free food.

I must first say that I do not own these jars only the Ball canning jars. However, as soon as my financial situation improves, this is 1st on my list. Apparently, the canning lids (Ball, Kerr, Golden Harvest, and Bernandin) are coated with an industrial chemical called Bisphenol-A (AKA: BPA). It can mimic the hormone estrogen and potentially cause increase in the risk for cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Most human exposure is through our diets and that's because BPA is leached through canned foods that come in contact with the resin coating. That being said, I will be buying the Weck brand from now on.

The glass jars are beautiful. But the first time I used these for roasted tomatoes in a water bath none of the lids formed a seal. I switched out the lids to ball jar lids and they sealed fine in the water bath. The jars are still lovely even with ball jar lids so they will make a nice homemade gift.

Works just like every other canning jar you've ever had. The neat shape makes it stand out on your shelf and may actually make it easier to scrape out all of the contents.

While expensive compared to the usual Ball offerings, the Leifheit jars feel more substantial and more like a gift when filled.
I would never use these if I were making a huge batch of chutney or apple sauce but for cranberry relish around the holidays, they look terrific.

FYI everyone - just called their customer service to ask what is in their "anti-corrosion coating" on those lids... they said "not 100% BPA free"...

I bought these for jams...none would seal properly. I've done a lot of canning and I normally use Mason or Ball jars. I liked the unusual shape and wanted to give away homemade jams as gifts...not working out for me. Forget the fluff and buy reliable jars.
