Editorial Reviews

From the Label
Originally released in 1959, LEIS OF JAZZ takes the sultry standards of smoke filled 40's clubrooms and gives them an uplifting twist, not to mention that it enabled Arthur Lyman to fulfill his jazz roots. Though he was riding the charts with his TABOOs, not many fans or critics knew of his early training in jazz. Time magazine educated the masses in their August 17, 1962 issue:

"Arthur's introduction to music was on a toy marimba. Each day after school, Arthur's father put some old Benny Goodman records on the phonograph and locked Arthur in his room with orders to "play along with the records for the rest of the day." Arthur "hated it" but he also learned: "I mastered every [Lionel] Hampton solo."

By the time he was 14, Lyman was good enough to play with a combo in a Honolulu jazz cellar: from there he graduated to the Martin Denny Trio…"

Indeed, Lyman routed Hawaiiana through jazzy avenues, but it took LEIS OF JAZZ for him to fully explore his musical foundation. From "My Funny Valentine" to "Body & Soul," Arthur Lyman delivers traditional jazz with crisp chime and polished perfection. These are versions like you've never heard them, the kind that will leave you humming in the sunshine rather than pining over bourbon on the rocks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't get much BETTER than THIS!, March 16, 2001
By brian marsland (melbourne beach, fl United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is my all-time FAVE Arthur Lyman album, and Mr. Lyman is my all-time favorite musician from the "Exotica-Trio" (Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Les Baxter)

This CD is a must-have. I've listened to it 10,000 times and I still love to hear that first track starting up. Great stuff. I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Lyman in Hawaii, (where he still plays his Vibes every Friday at the New Otani Hotel!) he's a great entertainer, and i highly recommend checking him out- he still looks great, and nothing beats sipping a mai-tai while overlooking waikiki beach listening to the "Exotic Sounds of Arthur Lyman"!

(june 20, 2002 - unfortunately Arthur has passed. He will be missed, but do yourself a favor and invite him into your living room today by listening to this CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars Brubeck with an Hawaiian flair, February 25, 1999
By A Customer
I've been looking for this album for over 25 years and to find it on a CD was a dream come true. Thank you Amazon. I had listened to this album over 35 years ago and fell in love with the Lyman sound. Being a fan of Dave Brubeck,I found the sounds to be very close and enjoyed it immensely. Anyone who is a fan of the Lyman sound should have this in their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music from a Beautiful Man, February 18, 2003
By Haole Girl (Waikoloa) - See all my reviews
Arthur Lyman was an amazing gentle talented person. His gentle touch on the marimba & vibes could transform you to the islands or to the stage or whatever genre the song represented. And his warm voice could gently envelope you. Truly beautiful music from a beautiful man. He will be missed.
