About the Author

Michael Ham has been shaving for more than half a century, but only belatedly discovered how to shave with pleasure. He began by posting what he had learned from his and others' experience on his blog, leisureguy.wordpress.com. As he learned more, he expanded that brief post into a book for the novice wetshaver.

The Leisureguy's Guide to Gourmet Shaving really conveys the authors love and enthusiasm for the subject.

For you guys that want to save a lot of money by shaving with double-edged blades the learning curve is much more shallow if you carefully read this book.

I suppose that one gets a bit spoiled by the interweb...one should read the book with a laptop on hand to check the links that are cited!

After months of reading ABOUT this book, I finally ordered a copy for myself. My opinion? Well, I read it, then re-read it, then re-read different chapters, and am sure I will re-read it all again! I still learn something new every time I pick it up.

I picked up a safety razor about a year ago and knew very little about good technique and good equipment. I got a cheap-quality razor, rushed through things, cut myself like crazy, and gave up, thinking the DE razor "isn't all it's cracked up to be."

A few months back I got tired of the irritation on my face from using my cartridge razor and thought I'd take another whack at DE razor shaving. I got an Edwin Jagger DE89L, an EJ best badger brush, TOBS Avocado, and a copy of this book. I took my time, determined to get it right if it took me a year. Well, it didn't take me a year, lol--it took less than a month. This book did more to open my eyes to proper technique and tools than anything else I've checked out online. (And I've checked out a lot!) My wife recently commented on how she's never felt my face so smooth. She questions the fact that I now have several new razors and brushes in my collection (her argument is that I "only have one face"), but she loves the results. And yes, I constantly feel my face throughout the day at work, lol.

What more can I say? GET THE BOOK. If you're a DE novice or a seasoned veteran, you owe it to yourself to get a copy. I'll never go back to my old razor and system; I'm having too much fun using an "outdated" method my father used for years. Get a copy for yourself, and learn to enjoy shaving all over again!

This guide is the best starting point for anyone new to wet shaving. I had no idea there was this whole culture of "wet-shavers" rejecting modern conformity, saving money, and turning a dreaded daily task into something you can look forward to. One great investment!

Despite its few shortcomings, I wish that I had read this book before getting back into DE shaving.

My dad shaved with nothing but a DE and I learned from him back in the early 60's. Of course, I had to "upgrade" to all the latest and greatest from Gillette and Schick and even used a Braun electric for a few years.

I bought the Braun after getting sick and tired of paying $4 per cartridge and only getting a few shaves. The Braun worked well enough for an electric but never really gave me a blade-close shave.

To be truthful, I'm not sure what drove me back to a DE. The blades are certainly cheaper but, for the rest of the gear, the sky is the limit. Considering I did very little research prior to buying back into the DE system, I have to admit that I didn't do too badly.

It wasn't until I was using my new DE for a few months that I came across this book. It looked interesting and the ratings were certainly good. However, considering the poor print quality. lack of color photos (which probably aren't really needed) and number of pages, I would call this book somewhat overpriced. I also have to admit to being very confused by some of the references that seemingly lead to nowhere.....but that might just be me.

I have to admit that there's a lot of information here. Much of it is very basic and the majority of the information is really common sense. I did pick up a few tips, but nothing that was an eye-opener.

The fact that I did things backwards (like buying the book AFTER buying the gear) probably makes it less valuable to me than to someone who buys the book first. Actually, most of the information here can be had for free on the Internet at forums like shavemyface.com and others where the author is actually a member.

Whatever possessed me to want to roll back time and use a double-edge razor, I don't know! I guess the sight of multiple pieces of tissue stuck to my face and neck is appealing in a sort of Transylvania way. This book cured all that. Oh, I am still using a double-ege razor, but am now enjoying it and am not contributing to the pocketbooks of the tissue-sellers any longer. More than you thought possible, you will find in this treatise on shaving. If you just want to a quick, close shave and to get it over with, this book is NOT for you. If you think shaving is a ritual, a time of day when you can truly live in the moment, the heck with the rat-race to come later, this time is MINE, even the wife leaves me alone right now; then, this is your book.

I read this book on the same day it arrived. There is a lot of wisdom within this book. My shaves have improved exponentially as I am no longer experimenting blindly with these super-sharp blades close to my face. This book gives the reader some good basic building blocks to build on and then provides additional resources for advanced study.

This is a great read. The author comes off as a regular guy that does his homework. Not only is he knowledgeable and helpful, but shows a great concern for other men getting through this daily event which is not only a dreaded bother, but actually a painful event for so many men when it doesn't have to be that way.

The author approaches shaving not as a necessary evil, but a process, that if done correctly and with the right preparation, respect, and care can be a very relaxing and skillful ritual that imbues the artist with a pride in mastering a skill that pays back in spades. He explores the senses and pleasures than can be had with the skill of wet shaving as well as the individuality that comes with the challenge of a man, his blade, and the implements that he chooses, once he understands them, to aid him in his quest for the perfect shave. That is what this book ultimately is, a mentor on the journey to individual perfection of a personal art. Fully considereing his advice, shaving can become a pleasant daily challenge that can consistently be the day's first victory.
