Book Description

The sixth edition of the complete beginner's guide to traditional wetshaving---brush, shaving cream or soap, and safety razor with double-edged blade---is a major update of the previous edition: a third larger, with a new chapter, new sections, and covers new aspects of shaving such as DIY products and guidelines on collecting. Reviews of new razors and other shaving products are included, and the appendix now includes well over 100 on-line vendors as well as forums and reference sites. The book provides excellent guidance for beginners putting together their first shaving kit and discusses tradeoff considerations in the initial purchases.

Traditional shaving is enjoyable and thrifty: double-edged blades are as low as 7¢ each---a year's worth of shaves for $3.50---compared to the same amount spent for one single disposable multiblade cartridge. The recommended beginner razor, one of the Edwin Jagger DE8x series, will last a lifetime and uses a recently designed head that easily provides a comfortable shave using techniques described in the book.

The multiblade cartridge's tug-and-cut action often results in skin irritation, razor bumps, in-grown hairs, and razor burn---thus all the "protective" shaving preparations and "soothing and healing" aftershaves now offered. Most men with these skin problems decide that they have "sensitive skin," never realizing that the problem is their daily use of a multiblade cartridge whose its tug-and-cut action, made even worse by the shaver pressing hard to try to extend the life of the (expensive) cartridge.

The book also includes a chapter on shaving and skin problems, including information on how DE shaving can help those who have acne as well as how to cure and prevent razor bumps and in-grown whiskers.

The book is a complete instruction manual and guide in itself, but it also includes links to a host of resources on the Web to complement the book. Included with the book is a comprehensive list of on-line shaving vendors and other sources of equipment and supplies for everything you need to get started.

It's a perfect gift for Father's Day, Valentine's Day, birthdays, graduations, and bar mitzvahs---and a particularly apt gift for men who shave daily but when asked whether they actually enjoy shaving answer, "No. I hate it." Give them this book so that they can look forward eagerly to their next shave---not an exaggeration. Men who have just started DE shaving frequently write that they wish they could shave more than once a day and look forward eagerly to the next shave.

About the Author

Michael Ham started traditional wetshaving 50 years ago, when it was simply "shaving." He hated it because he didn't know how to do it and the only instructions available at the time were limited to "be careful and try not to cut yourself." So for most of 40 years he wore a beard or used a multiblade cartridge and canned foam, which made shaving a tedious, boring, hateful chore. Then he stumbled into the shaving the old way, but this time around he learned how shaving could become something he truly enjoyed---and he wrote this book to help other men look forward to their daily shave as with the same eagerness he now feels.

I've been a longtime Amazon shopper, but this is the first thing I've purchased here that's made so much of an impact that I needed to write a review. Pardon the length of this review; I appreciate very detailed reviews myself so that's how this ended up.

To be honest, while waiting for the book I had a mixture of excitement to see what it was all about and regret since I was already finding a ton of information on various fora. However, I was wrong for feeling that way. Everything in the book from the preface to the Appendix is absolute gold for anyone just entering the wetshaving world.

While it is true that much of this information is out on the internet, what you're paying for is Michael's style injected into his explanation of this hobby/art. I find it a lot easier to understand any given subject matter if the person explaining it is passionate about it. That is definitely the case with this book. While the typical "guide" books simply present material in a "do this, not that" style, this is more akin to sitting and chatting with the author over a nice glass of Lagavulin.

The reason I know this book more than worth the $12 is that reading it not only taught me a lot, but also simultaneously prompted many questions that I'm excited to explore. I've made one pass at the book so far, and I'll definitely be referring to it time and again as I get deeper into wetshaving. Some reviews say this book is pretty useless for those who are already experienced. While I can understand that sentiment (since the book is targeted towards beginners), I feel that in some cases experienced shavers may derive even more from this book than beginners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every man should have this book. September 25, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book will be especially helpful to you if you have to have shave everyday and it makes you miserable, if you avoid shaving because it irritates your skin, or if you are tired of spending money on expensive multi-blade cartridges for your current razor. The methods and products described in the book are now considered traditional-it is how most people in the world shaved until the 1970s. The razor most recommended by the author can be had for about $30, I got one for less right here on Amazon this year. Blades for it can cost less than a dime and no more than 50 cents and they will last several shaves. I was already using the razor plus a good shaving brush and quality shaving soaps for some time before I read this book. I thought I had it all down but my shaves improved when I tried some of Hamm's suggestions. Not all of them worked for but many did. You will encounter some small typos and errors as this appears self-edited but they did not detract from the book enough for me to lower my rating. While much of the information in this book can be found online in shaving forums, I'm not aware of anyplace else where it appears in such a well organized manner. The book will guide you through everything you need to know to start getting great shaves and saving money. I wish I had had this book when I was learning to shave or even 10 years ago. It could have saved me a lot of misery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and thoroughly researched June 23, 2013

You can learn what you need to know in a few hours with this book ... or you can spend a few weeks reading various sources on the web. I've done both ... and what "Leisureguy" summarizes in his book is an excellent compilation of the collective advice on the web. His research, insight, and writing style is worth the small price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth reading & eye opening January 23, 2014

Months ago I converted back to shaving with a double edge razor. Love the shave, but something was missing ... the "experience". Years of shaving in the shower with a multi-blade, no prep and in less than a minute had dulled my shaving skills. I accidently found this book and bought it right away. Read it in a day, ordered some shaving necessities and have now established my personal "experience". I tried most of Ham's ideas and decided on which I preferred. I love the book because of the transformation it made on my shaving life.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome June 18, 2014
By Aaron
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is so comprehensive, there is no need to search for other material. So many great tips on what to buy (with a myriad of information in the appendix providing many researched vendors, forums, etc.) how to save money on what you buy and very descriptive instructions for proper shaving.

It can be slightly convoluted in the telling of the information (and thus certain pieces of information can be difficult to locate again later) since it is presented in a more story-like manner, but it does make the reading more enjoyable.

It changed the way I shave for the better... MUCH better!
