Beautiful mix of music and poetry, June 30, 2007
This review is from: Lejos (Audio CD)
La Chicana is a wonderful small tango band with an original, creative composer (Estol) and a captivating singer (Solá). In this CD, they try new things. Compared to the other La Chicana CD that I own (Ayer hoy era mañana) this one has more original songs by Estol, and tries new rythms as well (tracks #3 and 9 are cumbias, I believe.) The lyrics are beautiful, very descriptive in a poetic way, and often moving (Solá's voice helps a lot.) Of course, if you don't understand Spanish, you will feel a lot less warm toward this CD. In particular, if you are into tango because of the dancing, this CD does not have that much to offer in terms of danceable songs... or at least in terms of *easily* danceable songs. Some of them are danceable, but require some creativity... they would fit within the broad field of "alternative tango." So, if you are a tango DJ, you will have to listen carefully to the songs in advance to decide which one/s to try. But, again, if you understand Spanish and appreciate new and original music, you will love this CD.
