"The title of my album, "Leman", means mirror. For me a mirror is a reflection of what we are. You cannot lie in front of the mirror. You can also see behind you in a mirror. "Leman" is about my past, really, and about being African. I see the problems that Africa suffers from and cannot do nothing. It's one of the reasons why I sing in my own language. Bassa is only one of the 260 Canmeroonian languages that fewer and fewer children know how to speak. With that, cultures and traditions are lost forever."

A super-mellow acoustic-pop debut from this wispy Cameroonian crooner. The style is descended from crossover-y superstars such as Salif Keita and Youssou N'Dour, although Bassy seems content to linger amid less adventurous arrangements, crafting quiet, lulling tunes full of gentle rhythms and demure sprinklings of African instruments such as the kora and calabash. The style suits his voice, which is dreamy and calm. It's a pretty-sounding record that many will find rich as well as relaxing -- the more I listen, the more I like. Definitely worth checking out.
