This is a joyful and thought-provoking book for all ages about how animals can cope with serious handicaps. I've witnessed my own critters make remarkable comebacks from serious illness and injury, including a blind turkey named Hazel. 'Lemon the Duck' is a chronicle of just this kind of courage. It's inspiring on the human side, too. Few people would go to the trouble of teaching a duck with neurological problems to stand up and feed on her own. Laura Backman and her students show how far love can go, and you have to wonder who benefited most - Lemon, or Laura and the children. Both the text and the superb illustrations make this book a must. - Bob Tarte, author of 'Enslaved by Ducks' and 'Fowl Weather.'

Beautiful book that helps explain to children that animals/people with disabilities are not that different.

This is a wonderful story about a teacher who hatches out a duckling with very special needs. Lemon can't walk and cannot go with the other ducklings to a pre-arranged home. The children in Lemon's classroom learn that animals with special needs are just as worthy of our love and attention. This is a wonderful picture book based on a true story.

Excellent book to teach young children to care for & nurture animals (& people)who are different or have an illness.

"Lemon the Duck" is a wonderful story of a duck born with a disability, and how a kindergarten class and their teacher helped the duck adapt to its unique situation. This is not just a story of compassion, but one that teaches children that all creatures great and small, sick or well, are of value.

My class loves to hear Lemon the Duck read to them. They make lots of connections to the story and learn that all creatures deserve to be cared for no matter what their limitations. Lemon the Duck teaches us many lessons, but the lessons of respect and commitment really make the biggest impact. Ms. Backman is an inspiration to us all because of her commitment to Lemon, her dedication to children, her family and any animal in need. We are huge fans of Lemon and Ms. Backman!

Ths heartwarming story is for both young and old. It tells of how love and determination can conquer all. As the "mother" of a blind dog, I can relate to a story of how love can give so much strength. This is a wonderful read; for both the child and the adult! I recommend it highly!!!

This is the stuff about which Disney Channel makes movies! And the fact that this is a true story is even more heartwarming and amazing. People often make the mistake in thinking only certain animals can be loving and rewarding pets. This story shows the immense value of each little life, no matter how small or insignificant the world may view it. WONDERFUL!!!
