Wow!

Ok, so when I watched a clip of Aslyn's video for "Be The Girl" I immediately signed it off as adult contemporary pop rock. Another act for the radios.

Yeah, first impressions SUCK.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good At What It Is, November 5, 2005
This review is from: Lemon Love (Audio CD)
Since the CD is obviously targeted for a young female audience, some might think it's ridiculous for a guy in his mid-forties to review the debut album from Aslyn, entitled "Lemon Love." These same people would probably find it even more ridiculous to hear that I actually like it. Don't get me wrong, it's not the type of CD that I'd recommend to my steadily aging male counterparts who find it increasingly more difficult to like anything contemporary. Far be it from me to suggest that they (we) should listen to music outside of our self-defined box every once in a while, or that diversity in taste is a good thing. No, I wouldn't do that. But, if I were only capable of listening to music that is aimed exclusively at my own age bracket, then why would anybody care about what I have to say? It seems to me that there is more fun to be had in listening to as much music as is humanly possible, and judge it on its own terms, not mine, which is why I think Aslyn's album is genuinely worthwhile, and why I think her target audience will soon be picking up on this new talent.
Forget the Britney clones and the Simpson sisters. Aslyn has a style that is much less manufactured and a sound that is genuine and unique. For starters, she can sing. I mean, really sing. Mix some of Avril Lavigne's sassiness with some of Nelly Furtado's individuality, then add a heavy dose of vocal chops and a few drops of interpretive ability, and you'll get close to Aslyn's sound. Granted, the subject matter is hardly new; Most of the material is based on getting the boy ("Be the Girl", "You Got Me", "Rainbow", and "Here") or losing him ("Gotta Get Over You", "493-1023", "Lemon Love", and especially "Golden", which counts its way through past loves), but she's good at it. Her voice is strong and her personality shines through enough to make even the most plebian of topics sound like she genuinely means what she's singing. Her positivity and sense of melody gives each tune an optimistic sheen that becomes infectious. With absolute top-notch production and a fabulously rich chorus, "Just Enough" is the best kind of ear candy, and deserves to be all over the radio this summer. Gray-haired guys might not get it, but that's their problem, because like it or not, the future belongs to artists like Aslyn. B Tom Ryan

Yeah, first impressions SUCK.

This CD was put on constantly in my store, and it grew, and grew, and grew...until I couldn't take it anymore. I didn't want to just hear it at work, I needed it.

This CD surpasses anything I could have expected. I compare this to any debut from any soft-rock superstar (Alanis, Natalie Imbruglia...) as she has lots of talent and a huge potential!

The standout songs are "Gotta Get Over You", "Golden", and "Wally".

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow , where have they been hiding this girl!, August 18, 2005
This review is from: Lemon Love (Audio CD)
I like everyone else didn't discover this talented girl through my kids , nor video , nor American Idol , but as opening act for Chris Isaak.
I've heard many promising talents come and go over the years , I
expect to see this young girl to be around a long time , and if you have young daughters like me , they will be wearing this cd out and singing these songs long before those Grammy people have decided to give her a nomination.
I can hear shades of Carole King , Elton John , Beatles and Sheryl Crow, but make no mistake , it is her own stamp put on these gems. A lot of love and energy put in the songs from this gifted composer and singer.
There are no second takes live on stage and she was flawless behind that piano when I saw her. Equally impressive when greeting and signing for fans , this is the real thing that comes along only once in a great while.
Be The Girl , Rainbow ,Just Enough, 493-1023 , solid tracks,
get your kids to sample these or track down her videos, nice to meet you Aslyn, just before you become one of the hottest new stars!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a good album., August 15, 2009
By
This review is from: Lemon Love (Audio CD)
This album is really catchy and very well written, It's hard to believe artists like Aslyn get overlooked and others (Who I won't name) are steady climbing to the top- You know who you are. For those who are unfamiliar with Aslyn she plays the piano- that's her thing, She plays by ear and writes her own music. You probably think because she plays an instrument this album would have a Folk or Alternative sound to it, not the case. "Lemon Love" is very commercial to say the least and it's not a bad thing, I like this CD with a passion. The first single from "Lemon Love" was the popular "Be The Girl", It's been played on various reality shows like "The Hills" "Laguna Beach" & "My Supersweet 16" to name a few- this should give you an idea of it's sound. At first the opening track "Just Enough" had to grow on me, I didn't like the lyrics in this one "I'll backwash you, You dirty spoon..." I don't like how that sentence is put together. "You Got Me" is another song I didn't like right away, The chorus has very manufactured pop sound- It's not very original and the words "You got me bad, You got me good" are said too many times in this song. "Ain't No Love" is actually a really good song that had to grow on me, This started out just okay and is now one of my favorites. Those three songs were the only ones I didn't like from the start. Now I love this entire album, This album wouldn't be the same without any one of these songs. Although this album is short it still has a strong delivery. This is the only time "12 tracks" are acceptable when the songs are quality, Otherwise it would be much too short especially because it gets smaller with each song you don't approve of. My favorite songs on the album are "Golden" "Here's To Believe" "Lemon Love", The second single (Which didn't get any airplay) "Gotta Get Over You" and the teary eyed piano-ballad "Here" at the end of the album were favorites of mine right from the start. "493-1023" I say is a big standout track, I don't think anyone could listen to this album and not remember this is one that they heard. Overall I am so pleased with "Lemon Love" that i've already recieved 2009's follow-up to it, Which I will review as soon as amazon makes it available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lemon Love is anything but sour, August 25, 2007
By
This review is from: Lemon Love (Audio CD)
I happened upon exhuberant singer-songwriter Aslyn by chance after her debut was recommended from my browsing history on this website. Her playfully vintage album cover art intrigued me so I streamed her lead single "Be the Girl" on iTunes and fell in love enough to purchase it. However, after extensive sample listens of her debut Lemon Love I fell in love. Not only is this CD consistent throughout, ranging from catchy Top 40-friendly hooks as heard in aforementioned "Be the Girl" to rock-infused soul a la tracks "Just Enough" and "Gotta Get Over You." Her poignant, introspective songwriter side is evident on one of the disc's most compelling and standout songs in "Wally," an ode to her grandfather's lasting love for her deceased grandmother (Lemon Love was interestingly called such due to past failed relationships). Overall, listen for yourself to this piece of pop-rock perfection and you'll realize for yourself Lemon Love is anything but sour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Power Pop, pure and simple, January 24, 2007
This review is from: Lemon Love (Audio CD)
Nothing silly about appreciating this classic-pop-sounding record. First track is more Jellyfish than Britney, and the rest of this unfairly overlooked gem is run through with hooks. So grab a copy and sing along, men.

I first saw Aslyn open for Gavin Degraw and was very impressed with her. She is a true performer and a gifted singer/songwriter. The songs are catchy and the lyrics have meaning. Be sure to pick this one up - you won't be disappointed.
