5.0 out of 5 stars The Lemonade CLub
This was a very sweet, age appropriate book for my daughter. She and I really enjoyed it. My daughter smiled and laughed while I choked back my tears. This books captures life with cancer very well.

My daughter is 5 years old, in kindergarten, and in treatment for leukemia. She was bald when she started school and it was a Big Deal when she gathered enough...

1.0 out of 5 stars so offensive
Sooooooooooo not appropriate.I don't think I have ever been so offended by a child's book. Let me read a bit of the book to you. "...Traci noticed that Marilyn was losing weight. She was looking great! Even the mean girls didn't tease her anymore."..."I'm so tired, I don't even think I can get up!" You haven't gone on one of those awful diets, have you, Marilyn...

This was a very sweet, age appropriate book for my daughter. She and I really enjoyed it. My daughter smiled and laughed while I choked back my tears. This books captures life with cancer very well.

My daughter is 5 years old, in kindergarten, and in treatment for leukemia. She was bald when she started school and it was a Big Deal when she gathered enough confidence to attend school without her head scarf. She really enjoys reading books about experiences she has gone through during treatment. It makes her feel less alone. I am grateful to Patricia Polacco for writing this book.

It was wonderful to read a book that truly "got it" when it comes to feeling about cancer, teasing, children, friends and making the best of sour lemons.

I wait for every new book that Ms. Polacco writes and I'm never disappointed. I loved the 'almost' sad ending but she came through at the end. She's my favorite!

4.0 out of 5 stars Book Review: The Lemonade Club, December 10, 2007
This review is from: The Lemonade Club (Hardcover)
Patricia Polacco's books consistently occupy an unusual spot in the world of children's literature. Typically more mature than your average picture book yet less elaborate than your average chapter book, her stories tend to find their audience with the sensitive and worldly youngster. Based on a true story, "The Lemonade Club" continues in this tradition, offering up doses of sadness and friendship.

Friends Marilyn and Traci share a close friendship with their teacher, Miss Wichelman. She is supportive, always encouraging her students to make the most out of life's lemons. When one of the girls is diagnosed with cancer, the three friends - The Lemonade Club - will need each other like never before.

A tear-jerker to be sure, the emotion is brought to life in fine fashion through Polacco's wonderful pencil and marker illustrations. A story that will find it's audience and be enjoyed for some time to come.

I can relate to this book because I have walked in their shoes. You never know who your friends are until you go through something like this.Children's books can teach adults about the hardships of life and the true meaning of friendship.

This is a sweet book by Patricia Palacco. After teaching 3rd grade for many years, I can honestly say that my students and I have yet to find a PP book that we didn't like. Even after retiring, I continue to purchase her books and enjoy them very much. It's very special that most of her stories are based on actual events.
If I had to pick a favorite from all of her books, I couldn't.

This was a real tear-jerker which helps all ages to understand the importance of friendship and moral support during a serious illness such as cancer. The entire class rallies around a child and teacher both victims to cancer.

I bought this book for myself after I lost my father to leukemia last year. This year at school, I was in charge of doing a fundraiser for the Leukemia Society. To help my first graders understand what leukemia was, I read this book to them. I do admit that I ad libbed a bit, especially when they talked about breast cancer. But my little ones really got it. They understood what being that ill meant. I shared how the leukemia society helped my family out when my dad was in the hospital. The next day, I had students bring in the contents of their piggy banks and give up their snack money to contribute instead. The story is beautifully written, of course, and it was a welcome addition to my classroom library.
