A wonderful series,

Oh happy day! For years I've been trying to remember enough about these books to track them down, and now a search engine has done it for me. I read this series of "Trick" books probably in their first printing and adored them. Now that I have children of my own, I've been trying to figure out how to describe them to a librarian in order to track them down. Now with a few clicks, here they are! I only hope they all come out in an affordable format soon. Kerby may not be the original Harry Potter, but I can't wait to re-read all of these. Yippee!

Ah yes, those were much simpler times, when you could write a book that involved making magic potions with a chemistry set and drinking them or placing them in a lemonade vat... and not worry about getting sued. I'm curious - does the book come with a warning now? Or has the story been edited to reflect safer lab practices? Of course, to this end, few chemistry sets include anything that'll kill you anymore, either (justifiably so, I guess). All cynical humor aside, this is a terrific children's book. The rest of the series is well worth tracking down, also.

Wonderful author and book!,

I read (multiple times) and loved this book when I was a kid. I recently brought all my old books from my mother's house, and am reading them to my children. My 8 year old son and 4 year old daughter LOVED this book! Scott Corbett draws you into the story, and keeps you alternately laughing, groaning, and shouting "Oh no!". We have added Corbett to our list of favorite authors, and are reading more "Trick" books, as well as some of the other serial books he wrote.
This book is definitely one you want to have in your home library, so you can read it again and again.

What's worse than a potion that turns you into Mr. Hyde?,

If you're a kid and a bit of a troublemaker, it's a potion that turns you into a goodie two-shoes! Stir in a nose-twisting bully and a friend who's already too polite for his own good and you have a fun little story.
This was a nostalgia purchase, having owned and enjoyed the book when I was a kid. The book came when expected and was in very good shape - especially considering that it is a kid's paperback from 1968. The book was (very lightly) used, and there were no dog-ears and the spine was completely intact except for a very minor tear.

The Lemonade Trick by Scott Corbett,
A Kid's Review

You might not have heard about a lemonade trick and magic mix,but in this book you will.Kerby Maxwell isn't a neat person but he's not as bad as he seems. Also you migth think this book is boring but when youre in an exciting part you'll like to read more and more and more about the story. This kid meets this old woman and she, gave him a chemistry set,but when he mixes it and gets near,oh no.....I liked this book because it's interesting and emotional. The author gives examples so you would understand perfectly. Also because I didn't know some of the words and now I do and you'll learn new words too.He also describes how Kerby is feeling and everybody else too.I haven' read a book as interesting and remarkable as this book.

Fast, mindless read written for boys,

This review is from: The Lemonade Trick (Apple Paperbacks) (Paperback)
I ran across this book at the library and remembered that I had read it as a child. I didn't remember absolutely loving it, nor did I remember hating it. After re-reading it last night, I now know why I had no strong feelings attached to it.
The book is mildly entertaining, but the characters are flat and -- with a few exceptions -- the action is relatively predictable. Written for boys (although not inaccessible to girls), the book's only female characters are all adults. Our Hero, Kerby, is a Boy's Boy of 1960. He makes messes, resists doing his chores and stays out playing too late, but he isn't really a bad boy, and in fact, his parents worry about him when he behaves like a perfect angel. Naturally, Kerby has a faithful dog, who like him, gets into trouble but isn't really truly bad. Bumps Burton is the typical Misunderstood Bully, with standard bully name. Fenton Claypool is the Good Boy who is not so good as to be (in the author's words) "prissy"; Fenton's goodness allows the author to add one of the few truly surprising plot twists to the book. The adults also fit neat stereotypes, such as The Nosy Neighbor Lady and the Frazzled but Hyper-Organized Pagent Director. The basic plot is: Kerby does a good deed for an Eccentric Old Lady in Distress. The old lady gives Kerby a magic chemistry set. Strange things begin to happen. Is the set really magic? Who is the old lady? And how will Kerby avoid getting his nose twisted by Bumps? A light and somewhat entertaining read, this book is worth checking out of the library... but not adding to your own library at home.
