Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-- Greg LeMond may not yet be a household name, but to the growing contingent of bicycling fanatics, he is more of a success story than a Joe Montana or a Magic Johnson. This two-time winner of the Tour de France conquered the event for the second time after overcoming several medical setbacks including a nearly fatal wound in a hunting accident. For the growing legion of cycling enthusiasts (85 million participants--now the most popular American recreational sport), LeMond's victory is a testimony to determination, training, stamina, and the support of his family and many friends. This record-breaking athlete's story computes to an inspirational paean to hard work, generosity, good will, and the nontraditional sports challenge.

From Library Journal

A behind-the-scenes look at American bicyclist Greg Lemond, who made an "incredible comeback" from a nearly fatal hunting accident. Journalist Abt spent time with LeMond during his victorious Tour de France. While Abt seems to shift tenses at will, making it hard to determine when and where things are taking place, the inside look at the Tour de France, bicycling teams and agents, other European races, and famous bicyclists such as Bernard Hinault, will appeal to avid bicyclists as well as interested readers. Some of the material may seem familiar to readers of Abt's In High Gear: The World of Professional Bicycle Racing (LJ 6/15/89), a collection of his news stories. Although Abt seems to take some liberties with LeMond's inner thoughts, the book is informative and easy to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Bit More of an American Cycling Legend Revealed, February 27, 2006

This review is from: Lemond: The Incredible Comeback of an American Hero (Hardcover)
Greg LeMond seems to be a bit misunderstood. Samual Abt does a good job of clarifing some of those misunderstanding through this book. It gives a personal account by Greg of what he was thinking during and after key races and events (how he could have won at least one more Tour, how he believes he could have continued to win more Tours, his negotiation contracts and tactics). A very good look at what lead to the comeback of an American Cycling Hero. I had a problem with the book's order of events. There was a general chronological order but it was mixed with jumping around between time periods. I think this took a little bit away from the book. Overall though, I recommend it and can't wait to read Samual Abt's new book.
