5.0 out of 5 stars Look at Permissions and Code - Good to Go July 2, 2015
Also available on Google Play, but surprisingly the Amazon Appstore Version is up-to-date (this is hardly the general case with Amazon Appstore versions).

Permissions are all legitimate - a few explanations of ones you may wonder about:

The Camera Access is used by an internal [Flashlight] feature, turning on your camera's flash to steady.

Read Device State allows the app to pause if a phone call comes in. Read Device Identification is NOT present even though it shows up as a nested Read Device State & ID as a basic permission listing. I inspect permission syntax, which what Amazon also lists, so don't get worried if you see Device State & ID show up. Just how Android lists it even if only one of the two is used.

Wake Lock (or Keep Screen from Dimming) allows the app to remain open during Live Reporting, even if you have your device display set to sleep at a set time.

Code is generally fine. Does contain Google Analytics and Crashlytics, both are analytics that report aggregate anonymous data on app performance, the latter being specifically for internal app crashes. Also contains PayPal integration. The app is free, and has five freely generated reports included. More reports are apparently available for a dollar each in blocks of five, so PayPal can be a payment option (though I would also assume available as an Amazon Appstore In-app purchase as well). Nothing else of interest in the code add-ons.

Installed a total of 14.31MB (including Data).

The Bluetooth connection to this app will not preclude other active Bluetooth connections, such as Hands-Free Calling, even while pulling Live Reports. Now that bit I find super cool!

1996 F150 5.0, hooked up easy and worked well using Samsung Android Infuse. Opted to pay the $5 for Torque Pro.

I was supplied a sample of the Bluedriver OBDII Scan Tool hardware so I could use it and this free app and write an honest review.

The [[ASIN:B00652G4TS Bluedriver OBDII Scan Tool
and this partner app are each useless without each other and very useful together. For a useful context I'll cover information about the scan tool in this review.

The only thing in the Scan tool box that isn't paper is the Bluedriver OBDII plug!

The first step is to install this free Bluedriver app on your IOS or Android device. Besides on Amazon the app is available on Apple app store and Google play. The OBDII Scan hardware is useless without the app and vice versa. You will use Bluetooth in your smart device to connect the Bluedriver OBDII scan tool and app. I like that the connection is direct to the device (no third party monitoring or GPS tracking).

The Bluedriver OBDII Scan tool plugs into your car's diagnostic port. Cars have had these since last century so yours probably does - if you can find it. In my 2007 Gen II Prius it's under the dash near the center console. The plug faces straight down and my Bluedriver scan tool plugged straight up into it and fit securely. That was my physical installation.

When you first connect be sure to upgrade the firmware in the OBDII Scan tool. The Bluedriver app walks you through a simple setup. You can select what information you want to view in real-time (I learned to keep it simple to avoid info overload).

The Bluedriver app is the only interface to get information from the Bluedriver OBDII Scan too and your car.

This video was actually done for the hardware, but I realize that it also is informative about the app. Of course, the app and the hardware are both needed; it doesn't make any sense to just have one.

We tested the device with our Android Samsung phone. Both the app and the device worked well; we were quickly able to read the diagnostic information on our 2007 Ford Mustang. We tested many of the functions available. For instance, we prompted the device to give us VIN information, show engine codes, clear codes, show the "MIL" information, show the Smog device data, and display several of the "help" videos. All of the functions worked well. Some thoughts:

+ Simple to install the device--just plug it in to your car diagnostic port, turn the ignition on, and start the app. It will request bluetooth access.
+ Bluetooth sync was flawless.
+ Lots of diagnostics available. The app rapidly displayed the VIN information, and the "codes" (I had none.)
+ It's simple to request "clearing" of the codes. Even though I had zero codes, I instructed the device to clear them anyway.
+ Well-done "help" videos in the app that show you how to do certain functions. I was a little surprised by these; they are professional videos, not just some "Joe" half-way explaining something.
+ The smog check is a valuable function. It shows you areas that might cause you to fail your next smog check. Great idea--this way, you can know ahead of time about any problems, and fix the problem before wasting your time getting a smog check.

+ One very BIG plus: I sent a query about some technical details to the supplier. The service person, Andrew, responded and answered my technical question in 11 minutes! Fantastic. This is VERY rare.
