Book Description

January 1, 1995 Conservation International - Tropical Field Guide Series
Lemurs are primates found exclusively on Madagascar, but their appearance and the extraordinary diversity of species have captured the interest of primate watchers everywhere.

This guide profiles all 50 known species and subspecies of lemurs, from their origins and discovery to recent studies and on-going conservation efforts. Included are full descriptions, many color images, maps showing distribution patterns, and detailed drawings of the postures and behaviors used by naturalists to distinguish between species.

For years I thought this book was out of print; maybe it still is. I bought it used and got a really clean and apparently unused copy for a very reasonable price. I've been looking for this book ever since I borrowed it from a friend before going to Madagascar several years ago. I wanted to buy one then but the used copies I found were very expensive. This is the BEST lemur guide there is. The photos in the text are all in black and white but the color plates include both photos & drawings and are very helpful. Descriptions and maps are also excellent as are the drawings that show posture and behavior. If you're bound for Madagascar and will be looking for lemurs, this book is a must. However, if you can afford the newer edition then by all means buy the 3rd edition of this book.
