I would assume that the only reason the vacuum would fail would have to be when the gum seal on the under side of the lid fails. A vacuum is the same reason your canned jellies and jams stay sealed and they can last a good long time. Failure of the seals don't happen to long as long as your jars are chipped and your seals are in good condition. If the seal looks bad toss it out replacements are cheap.
