It has been awhile since I read this work. I sold it not long after finishing it. It turned out to be a difficult read, rather dull slogging. The author covers alot of ground but is hesitant to come to any conclusions regarding Lenin's declining health and whether those around him--Stalin especially--contributed to his demise. A few unsolved murders of early party affilliates--again, no conclusions drawn--seem to bog the flow down and are only tangentially important to the main story anyway. It was interesting to learn that armed robbery & extortion were deemed acceptable fund raising activities for the early party. Pictures are included and are ok as far as I can see, not being a scholar on this topic. Yes, Lenin's activities are presented in some detail but his motives are not explored very deeply, nor is there any real judgement made here on the morality of the goings on presented. I'm afraid I would rather have read the "Cliff Notes" on this one and forgone the pleasure of reading it. This will appeal to the eager historian, used to dry reading to get the facts,( and to be fair, there are alot of facts presented) but I don't think the average reader will find this work enjoyable.
