5.0 out of 5 stars Great computer for a new undergraduate
Not too big but everything you need.
If you want an internal DVD R/W drive this is probably the best value out there.
Sent #2 son off to college with this and he loves it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it
bought it because I had good experience with Lenovo for 5 years. But this Y450 is killing me for slow performance, sticky mouse key. So if possible don't jump this computer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Laptop YET, April 26, 2011

So far, this is the best laptop I have ever owned. Previously a dedicated Gateway person (14in. and 15in. and loved both) and then a took a chance on a Toshiba 11in (hated it and sold it to buy this one). I have used Macs, Acer, Dell, and a number of others and none have been anywhere near as completely perfect.

The keyboard is fantastic, the processor and memory as shipped handles multiple heavy programs well, and while I do not do any gaming, I have had zero graphics issues with Desktop Publishing or standard use.

Couple of small caveats lead to a 4 Star vs 5 Star rating.
I don't like the mouse-pad select buttons feel. They must be pressed down a little farther than I like to register the selection. I am normally a button pusher rather than a pad-tapper so I have had to adjust a little for my comfort.

Another is the one-button recovery. Maybe I need to slow down a little but on more than one occasion, I have attempted to start or wake up my computer only to find that I am now in Recovery Mode. And it always happens, again, when I am in a hurry. Wish they had put that button somewhere else.

Seems there is little pieces of plastic film everywhere, to an extent I have never come across. Purely being picky now, but seriously, I am still finding "protected areas" that I cannot even access to remove the film.

And the last thing. And probably just a flook, but came back to computer after weekend away from office to find the Page Up button had popped off. Thought I could put back on as in previous laptops, but rather complicated and delicate procedure I did not have tools for. Called Lenovo, asking for local place to have very small (in my eyes) repair done.

Ended up sending the computer to TX, where they replaced the entire keyboard!

The Good. There was no cost to me and they only had the computer for 6 days. I have heard of lots worse, like three months without an actual repair occurring. And, while I did backup, it came back perfectly.

OVERALL: Fantastic, just takes a little getting used to.

Laptop..looks great. Has lots of drive space. The processor isn't the strongest but the 64bit edition of windows helps. I would recommend for general use. Arrive in excellent condition

2.0 out of 5 stars This laptop is NOT GOOD ENOUGH, April 28, 2010
This review is from: Lenovo IdeaPad Y450 41896FU Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.20GHz, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, 14" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (Personal Computers)
I have had this laptop for 5 or 6 months. At first I really liked it especially because I havent got a new one in the previous 5 years. The laptop was very fast and was quite stylish. I especially liked the keyboard and the outer cover (model: 4189).

Here are the problems I have had with it:
(1) The outer covering on the laptop (not the screen but the base) is plastic. And whenever you lift the laptop with one hand this outer cover gets squeezed. And a couple of times lifting the laptop the black cover at the bottom cracks in between tension points. This is unacceptable, I had a Sony Vaio FS550, for 5 years and this never happened. On that laptop the bottom was metallic and very strong.

(2) The keys on the keyboard gets sticky every now and then. This started happening to me just recently. I have no idea why.

(3) The cover when closed does not close 100%. The mechanism is magnetic and the strength is not enough to hold the cover to the base.

(4) The FAN is ridiculous loud. This laptop simply can't handle long work hours.

(5) Keyboard gets dirty like nobody's business. But its not as bad as having a loud fan and broken plastic covering.

I must say that the LENOVO customer service is immaculate. They are indeed very good, they offered to replace all these defects because I had warranty. I am probably gonna sell mine as soon as I get the laptop repaired, and buy a Sony VAIO VPCCW21FX/W Notebook PC - Intel Core i3 330M 2.13GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 3 Cell, 14" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, White
