1.0 out of 5 starsLenovo, WHAT were you THINKING?!?!?!?
ByD. Christensenon May 13, 2015
OK, first…there are two versions of this cell phone. Call them W and T. K30-W is the one that works, but BOTH are sold on Amazon (and other vendors) that sell in the United States. K30-T is a proprietary frequency set that is used only in China. Why would you buy a Chinese cell phone good only in China, from a United States vendor? I’m not sure, but plenty of unscrupulous vendors are willing to take your money, haha!
Now, to review the W version of this cell phone…
I would normally write a LONG review of a cell phone, going over all the features (good and bad) but I don’t feel like making the effort for this phone. On features and value…I’d probably give it four stars out of five. The only minor complaint I have is the case. It’s not very sturdy. I’ve only changed the batteries a few times and it’s already warped to the point where it won’t close all the way. Enough said about that…
No problems with call connection or voice quality or data downloads, etc. Cameras work awesome.
I have no choice but to give this cell phone 1 star out of 5 though. According to malwarebytes, the factory loads Trojans: Android/Trojan.Sivu, Android/Trojan .Agent.mq, Android/Trojan.Fadeb.a and Android/Trojan.Spy.SmsThief.be
Now some background on the malware situation:
A while ago (maybe a couple of months ago) there was a huge press release worldwide about how Lenovo was shipping malware with their brand new laptop computer systems. This made me curious about the Lenovo cell phone (A916) that I’d purchased for my wife recently. I scanned it with malwarebytes and discovered that YES, it was loaded with malware.
Only, I’d had the phone for a while, so I couldn’t be 100% sure that the malware came with the phone (from the factory). Fast forward a few weeks and my wife’s sister falls in love with my wife’s phone, wants me to order one for her. So I do. As soon as that one arrives, I immediately scan it with malwarebytes to find that it had (surprise, surprise) the same malware that had been on my wife’s phone.
In the meantime, Lenovo released the K3 and I LOVED the early preview reviews of it. My wife knew I was drooling over it, so she told me to go ahead and buy it. Same story though. As soon as it arrived, I scanned it with malwarebytes to find that it was loaded with malware.
Now I LOVE the cell phone. But it is inexcusable that on a new cell phone I have to root it and manually remove (from system folders) malware BEFORE I can even think about using it…
I won’t be buying Lenovo ANYTHING unless Lenovo stops loading their electronics with malware from the factory AND that is confirmed by multiple independent authorities on malware…
