Amazon.com Review

Effective for lawns, gardens, ball fields, golf courses, and other areas pests disrupt, this battery-operated device repels moles, gophers, ground squirrels, voles, and other burrowing animals by generating sonic sound waves. It is humane and an alternative to traps and poisons. It automatically generates sound waves (which become vibrations in the ground) every 15 seconds, convincing animals danger lurks so that they flee. Effective coverage area is up to 7,500 square feet. Watertight and ruggedly constructed of plastic, the device goes completely into the ground so it can be mowed over. It measures 16-1/2 inches long and 1-3/4 inches in diameter. Two D-cell batteries (not included) provided 4 to 6 months of operation. --Fred Brack

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work, August 7, 2002

There seemed to be less evidence of gophers in the beginning, but they are back as usual. I've been using it for three months.

3.0 out of 5 stars It seems to work..., June 7, 2002

I installed the MoleContro in the flower bed last night. This morning I didn't see those eerie holes and mulch scattered everywhere. So, it seems to be working. The annoyance is that you can still hear the faint buzzing sound within 4-5 feet of the MoleContro even though the whole device is buried underground (with only the cap and ring visible). I guess I just have to tune it out somehow...

I have tried everything to get rid of moles: castor oil-based repellents, grubicides, balls of fishing line, smoke bombs, car exhaust and these sonic repellents. The fact is: the only effective way to control moles is to trap (ie. English scissors) or spear them. These MoleContro's do seem to annoy the critters into moving elsewhere, but the effect is only temporary (lasting about two weeks). Even this effect is difficult to determine because moles change their digging patterns over time and you can't tell if the repellents worked or if they had just gone somewhere else on their own. In any case, after two weeks, they burrow up to and around the repellents with impunity.
