Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

As chairman of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1972, Melamed was instrumental in introducing futures on foreign currencies with the International Monetary Market--the "revolution" being that these are nontangible products without physical delivery. Futures had previously been confined to agricultural products. Since then the Merc has initiated several other futures contracts (e.g., Eurodollars, S & P 500). This book is a collection of Melamed's speeches and articles during the years 1969 to 1992 in which he argues for, explains, and justifies these contracts, an uphill battle against conventional wisdom and the scorn of the financial community. Institutions, which now own the majority of common stocks outstanding, have come to depend on these contracts to manage risk. If use is a measure of need, these contracts have proven their utility. Despite the inevitable overlap/repetition of various elements in a collection such as this, business collections will want it.
