Book Description

January 2000 Country Sports
The white-tailed deer population is now the highest it's been since the mid 1600s, making whitetails one of the greatest conservation success stories. However, this growth explosion has coincided with an increasing human population and the destruction of the deer's habitat. The result has been an effort to reduce the number of deer while juggling the needs and wants of landowners, the public at large, hunters, and the best interests of the deer themselves.

Fortunately, better management, coupled with our ever-increasing knowledge of the deer-thanks in part to noted experts such as Leonard Lee Rue III-should ensure the deer's future.

In "Leonard Lee Rue III's Way of the Whitetail" Rue leads readers through the whitetail's behavior, writing in his trademark "soft science" style with the authority of one who knows their every habit and haunt through personal research. The result is an easy read that's scientifically sound.

Readers follow the whitetail's behavior through the seasons-month by month. Rue also covers this animal's extraordinary sensory abilities and provides insight into the versatility and adaptability of this creature, which occupies a vast geographic range while other species struggle to merely exist among humans.

Also recommended: "Whitetails: Behavior, Ecology, Conservation," "Majestic Whitetails," and "Antlers."

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The whitetailed deer is one of the most common mammals in North America--and one of the most controversial. Rebounding from nearextinction due to overhunting at the beginning of the twentieth century, whitetails have now become too numerous in many areas. Understanding these deer, both for their sake and for the sake of the ecologically naive public, becomes increasingly important as their numbers rise. Rue, a deer expert and wildlife photographer, draws on his own knowledge of deer behavior and his exhaustive reading of the scientific literature to produce a book on whitetails that is both scientifically accurate and eminently readable by the layperson. Following the deer through the cycle of the seasons, Rue shows us why they act the way they do, and when. Beautiful photographs taken by the author, his wife, and son illustrate the text, and though the majority of the photos depict trophysize bucks, they are well chosen to clarify the text. Given the ubiquitousness and popularity of the subject, this welldone introduction to the life and behavior of whitetails belongs in all libraries. Nancy Bent

This review is from: Leonard Lee Rue III's Way of the Whitetail (Hardcover)
If you are looking for a book about Whitetail's this is the one to get. This book has amazing pictures, ( my favorite is a shot of a mature buck charging across a small river with some does and smaller bucks trailing behind) and a wealth of information about all aspects of the life and behavior of these majestic animals. This book will be loved by hunters, nature photographers, hikers, or anyone who wants to learn more about deer and/or view the best whitetail photography there is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A science and natural history coverage which not only hunters but classroom students will appreciate, February 6, 2006
If the name of Dr. Leonard Rue II sounds familiar, it's because he's produced numerous books on wildlife and is one of the most published wildlife photographers in the country. His Way Of The Whitetail comes packed with his gorgeous full-page color photos and provides a science and natural history coverage which not only hunters but classroom students will appreciate. From surveys on how mild winters allow bucks to keep antlers longer to seasonal changes in the northern states and how they affect whitetails, Way Of The Whitetail is vivid, technical and highly recommended.
