Classic Comics Press scores not just a hit, but a Grand Slam!, August 19, 2006
This review is from: Leonard Starr's Mary Perkins On Stage Volume 1 (Paperback)
If you appreciate classic comic strips in general ... and if you appreciate dramatic comic strips that were intelligently written ... and if you appreciate the art of the photo-realistic comic strips from that bygone era ... and if you appreciate the absolutely fantastic artwork (and writing) of the great LEONARD STARR ... and if you just love the Mary Perkins On Stage comic strip as much as I and other connoisseurs of fine classic comic strips do ... then this is THE book for you!
I bought this unbelievable book within two seconds of holding it in my hot little hands. Sporting a classy cheesecake cover of Mary Perkins, this volume reprints the dailies and Sunday episodes beautifully drawn comic strip from February 10, 1957 through January 1958. Also featured are some nice extras, such as a fine introduction by Walter Simonson, and "Leonard's World" by Charles Pelto, which provides some biographical information on the superb talent that is Leonard Starr.
This is my pick for the comic strip related Book of the Year. And what you should know is that, aside from being a fantastic book, this is a limited edition. Don't delay in purchasing it, otherwise you might find yourself encountering a difficult time later finding a copy, or paying a hefty price when you finally do locate one.
A beautiful book, and a BARGAIN at $19.95, you should buy this now! You'll be thanking me after you do. Volume two of this great strip is currently scheduled for a November 2006 release, and I'm eagerly awaiting it!

This review is from: Leonard Starr's Mary Perkins On Stage Volume 1 (Paperback)
Excellent compilation of one of the best strips around. Leonard Starr does brilliant work and this collection gives us the start of the strip and puts the first season together beautifully. I will certainly be buying the other seasons as they are issued

Outstanding, July 25, 2010
This review is from: Leonard Starr's Mary Perkins On Stage Volume 1 (Paperback)
I came to know about 'On Stage' while looking for some material on Alex Raymond and his style of art work.
This is an outstanding piece of graphic story telling. Strong storyline, deep characters, wonderful artwork, which is stunningly realistic. The sets, the angles, the costumes, the expressions, the actions, its really a masterpiece.
I heard someplace that more artists are fans of Leonard Starr than regular readers. I don't doubt it now. This is a complete study in graphic story telling. All the ingredients of a mega blockbuster movie are found in this series.
The artwork of Starr are simply awe-inspiring. Totally perfect images, very well inked. beautifully busy panels. very typical of the Golden age. Each sunday page takes up a page in this book, while three dailes occupy one page.
The story is about an aspiring actress and her life. Very well written , paced and presented.
The book is large, landscape format, matt (non glossy) paper, bringing out the inkwork very well. And this is thankfully not hardbound, making it a perfect one for not just "collecting", but actually reading.
This is the first of several volumes, out of which 7 are published at the moment (July 2010).
