This review is from: Leonardo Leo: Serenate e Cantate (Audio CD)
Leonardo Leo, on the basis of this recording, is a very interesting composer. He has a beautiful sense of form, can spin out highly engaging melodies, and is harmonically quite adventurous. The performances on this CD are good, but the CD has some problems. The acoustic the works were recorded in is very dry, and has the effect of heightening occasional intonation problems by the violins. The soprano, while a stylish singer, is bedevilled at times by pitch problems. The countertenor, who appears in the second work only, is excellent. Nevertheless, the performances are robust and alert, with a sure sense of the style of the period. Unfortunately, Italian texts are included but no translations. Still, I really enjoyed this music and recommend this CD in part because there are not likely to be many competing performances.
