Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-These brief series entries show a young Leonardo da Vinci astounding adults with his talents and versatility; Michelangelo being apprenticed at an early age; Picasso growing up as the son of a painter; and Toulouse-Lautrec suffering through a boyhood of crippling illness, cushioned by rich and indulgent parents. Some of the subjects' early work is reproduced as examples of their early interest in art, but only the last page of each slim title contains examples of their mature masterpieces. Hart includes fictionalized dialogue and softens some of the harsher realities of the men's lives. Although simply structured and phrased, the text uses many complicated and unfamiliar family and place names without the benefit of a pronunciation guide or glossary. The books are well designed, and the ink-and-watercolor illustrations have the lively and appealingly child-oriented quality of Edward Ardizzone's graphic style. Barely suggesting the scope and splendor of the adult achievements of these famous persons, the attractive visual qualities of these books may justify their purchase, despite the obvious euphemisms that reduce these accomplished and tempestuous artists to "Famous Children."-Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent description of the man written for children, September 30, 2001
This review is from: Leonardo da Vinci (Famous Children) (Paperback)
In my mind, there is no doubt that Leonardo da Vinci was the most talented person who ever lived. To the joy of us all, he was also one of the most prolific, drawing and painting everything in sight. Children need to learn about such people and how they enrich our lives from generation to generation. In this book, Hart and illustrator Susan Hellard capture the essence of da Vinci in a manner that is clear to children of elementary age. His passion for art and his diverse nature of exploration are clear and show how amazing he was. One can only wonder at how many patents he would have been awarded had there been such a thing when he lived. This is a book that should be read by all children.

2.0 out of 5 stars mediocre at best, August 1, 2006
This review is from: Leonardo da Vinci (Famous Children) (Paperback)
The illustrations lacked interest for my three children. I thought there would be a listing and introduction of more of Leonardo's investions and paintings.
