Count on losing a little sleep when you pick up Frieda Dryden's novel, Leonard's Wife, because you won't be able to put it down. Beginning with grief and guilt and progressing to violence and madness, Dryden covers the gamut of human frailties. In the tradition of William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury and Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, Dryden brings suspense worthy of an Alfred Hitchcock movie to her harrowing tale. Abused in every possible way, Lottie Skeets begins her life without a chance, yet she clings to her humanity against all odds. Unable to trust anyone or anything, she runs in terror from any offer of help that might make her life and her son's more normal. It's obvious from her own limited experience that any help would involve separating her from the only person to whom she can give the only love she knows how to give--and it truly is limitless. A child who had no parenting, she does her best, in the only way she can imagine, to be a better mother than the one she had. Although we see, throughout, that she craves the normalcy and beauty that's denied her, in the end, we're forced to decide if she's become a monster and, if so, what could have prevented that transformation. If one is treated monstrously, is it inevitable that he becomes monstrous?

I absolutely loved this book! It held my attention from the very first page. I found it while browsing free Kindle books and thought the description sounded interesting. I downloaded it but didn't start reading til days later (tons of books to catch up on!). I finally got around to it and my only regret was that I hadn't started it sooner! This story is amazing! I don't want to go too much into it and spoil it for other readers but the story deals with some very sensitive subject matters (rape, incest, child abuse). There is a paranormal element as well, it honestly kept me on the edge of my seat! I read it in one day and as soon as I finished I went straight to Amazon to see if Ms. Dryden had any other books...and she did! There are 2 sequels to Leonard's Wife making it a trilogy. I bought them read them BOTH in the same day! I simply couldn't put them down.

As I began reading this novel, I was initially enthralled. Interesting storyline, good character development and minimal grammatical errors kept my attention. Then, once I was captivated, the historical and chronological errors began to show up. The first I noticed was the mention of a television blaring in the lobby of the seedy hotel Lottie first stays in upon her arrival with newborn Leonard to Sacramento. Really? In 1940?? But, the story had me intrigued, and I could overlook one little error. Then, we get to Misty, and the hits (or should I say misses?) just keep on comin'! In 1957, cheerleaders did not wear skirts 4 inches above their knees. In 1957, HOOKERS did not wear skirts above their knees! In 1957, no one tied yellow ribbons around old oak trees or anything else to show hope and support for a loved one's safe homecoming. In 1957, there were fewer than 1000 7-Elevens and NONE in Sacramento or in CA at all. And, in 1957, there was no 911!!! I realize I'm being a bit nitpicky, but if you're going to set a story within a particular timeframe or historical period, please do a few Google searches to make sure what you're writing lines up with the era. I am only 60% through the book and so distracted by these inconsistencies that I don't know if I can bear to continue reading. And it's a shame, because the story is good and I would like to see how it ends.

Leonard's Wife is a real page turner that kept me wanting to see what was comming next. Read the entire trilogy in the order intended. Leonard's Wife, Mistys Child, Evil Seed. All three reads will give you different emotions and feelings while reading! Frieda Dryden does not disappoint. I can't wait for her next book.

I have to admit that this book was not at all what I was expecting. Being a mystery lover, I found myself really engrossed in what the main character was going to do as each new day of her life arrived. No way would I have guessed at what was about to happen next. This author has a unique imagination and presents a story that is almost impossible, yet you believe every page. Sure kept me on the edge of my seat!

Lottie will go to any length to protect her son and to make him happy. When she decides he needs a wife, she'll stop at nothing to find the perfect wife for her precious baby boy.

I got this as a free download and within a few pages I was hooked. So much so that as soon as I finished this one, I downloaded the second of the triology (Misty's Child).

This is one of the strangest books I have read but for some reason I had trouble putting it down. I always wanted to see what the next strange thing happening to this family. Bizarre family at its best.

I found this book a total page turner. Great sad, horrible story. Don't know to feel sorry or angry for Lottie. Reading this story feels like watching a Movie. Even the ending is great!
