I was not very familiar with Kogan before purchasing this set. Now I definitely have an appreciation for his art! The only reason I gave the collection 4 stars instead of 5 is that the cds are programmed very poorly; pieces are put onto the discs with no particular rhyme or reason and it does interfere with your enjoyment of the material to some degree. Of course most of us have cd players that can be programmed nowadays so at least you can get around that problem.

Nowhere on this page does Amazon list what pieces are included in the set, so here's a quick rundown:

Mozart #5

Bach A minor concerto

B minor vln/keyboard sonata

Paganini caprices 9 and 23

Bloch Nigun

Denisov Partita

Shostakovich #1

Saint-Saens Intro and Rondo Capriccioso

Beethoven sonatas 9 and 10

Tchaikovsky concerto, valse-scherzo, and meditation

Vieuxtemps "Gretry" concerto

Chausson Poeme

Sarasate Carmen Fantasy

Wieniawski Legende

Barber Concerto

Mozart Adagio in E

Beethoven concerto, romance in G, Turkish March

Kreisler Rondino on a theme by Beethoven

Waxman Carmen Fantasy

Massenet Meditation from Thais

Khatchaturian Concerto, concert rhapsody

Szymanowski Nocturne and Tarantella

Grieg Sonatas 1 and 3

Short pieces by Debussy, Sarasate, Albeniz, and Vieuxtemps

Rachmaninov Trio Elegiaque

Khrennikov concerto #2

Franck sonata

Schubert Fantasie

Schumann Fantasie

Kogan , one of the best violinist in Russia... on no !!@not only Russia , but the whole world , yes whole world .

From listeing his record , you can here the Russia violin sound , its very rich sound it will makes you feel its not a violin ,sometimes is just kind of like a viola.

Kogan his technique is also one of the best from i heard , even Heiftez still still worse compare to him , if you dont agree with you , you can go listen the Warmen :carmen fantasy !! try to listen them both , and you will know how crazy kogan is

and musically , its not the music kind is from school , he has his special of music taste , its just really great if you get familiar with him.

Get this Box is really a great idea, its cheap and its has most of the important piece he play !!

dont be haste , just check out and listen. believe me , you will always remember the Master

Leonid Kogan occupies a privileged place of honor at the time of quoting the great soloists of the instrument. His igneous vitality, mercurial energy, indomitable artistic conviction and unrestricted passion with which he "played" with the violin as it were made Kogan (1924-1978) a legend that transcended the barriers of spellbinding virtuosity to become obligatory reference, alpha and omega for many accomplished violinists of the present and future.

This ambitious selection contains only a part of the immense legacy of his recorded output and includes a series of recitals and concerts at the former Soviet Union.

Despite the poor sound typical of existing technology at the time, such is the magnificence of his style and his ineffable musicality that automatically you can easily block these external factors.

Do not miss this golden opportunity.
