Great Introduction to a Less-Famous Russian Master,
By
This review is from: Leonid Kogan Edition (Historic Russian Archives) (Audio CD)
I was not very familiar with Kogan before purchasing this set. Now I definitely have an appreciation for his art! The only reason I gave the collection 4 stars instead of 5 is that the cds are programmed very poorly; pieces are put onto the discs with no particular rhyme or reason and it does interfere with your enjoyment of the material to some degree. Of course most of us have cd players that can be programmed nowadays so at least you can get around that problem.Nowhere on this page does Amazon list what pieces are included in the set, so here's a quick rundown: Mozart #5 Bach A minor concerto B minor vln/keyboard sonata Paganini caprices 9 and 23 Bloch Nigun Denisov Partita Shostakovich #1 Saint-Saens Intro and Rondo Capriccioso Beethoven sonatas 9 and 10 Tchaikovsky concerto, valse-scherzo, and meditation Vieuxtemps "Gretry" concerto Chausson Poeme Sarasate Carmen Fantasy Wieniawski Legende Barber Concerto Mozart Adagio in E Beethoven concerto, romance in G, Turkish March Kreisler Rondino on a theme by Beethoven Waxman Carmen Fantasy Massenet Meditation from Thais Khatchaturian Concerto, concert rhapsody Szymanowski Nocturne and Tarantella Grieg Sonatas 1 and 3 Short pieces by Debussy, Sarasate, Albeniz, and Vieuxtemps Rachmaninov Trio Elegiaque Khrennikov concerto #2 Franck sonata Schubert Fantasie Schumann Fantasie

The Russian Master!,
By Hiram Gomez Pardo (Valencia, Venezuela) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Leonid Kogan Edition (Historic Russian Archives) (Audio CD)
Leonid Kogan occupies a privileged place of honor at the time of quoting the great soloists of the instrument. His igneous vitality, mercurial energy, indomitable artistic conviction and unrestricted passion with which he "played" with the violin as it were made Kogan (1924-1978) a legend that transcended the barriers of spellbinding virtuosity to become obligatory reference, alpha and omega for many accomplished violinists of the present and future. This ambitious selection contains only a part of the immense legacy of his recorded output and includes a series of recitals and concerts at the former Soviet Union. Despite the poor sound typical of existing technology at the time, such is the magnificence of his style and his ineffable musicality that automatically you can easily block these external factors. Do not miss this golden opportunity. |
