I've been delighted with this release! The selections chosen are perfect choices to highlight Leonie Rysanek's memorable artistry. I especially appreciate having excerpts from the early part of her lengthy career. The sound is quite impressive and I'm grateful that the Vienna Opera managed to preserve these glorious performances.

The term "singing actress" usually means that someone is a great actor and compelling on stage, but you probably wouldn't want to hear them on CD. Rysanek is WITHOUT QUESTION the greatest actress that I've ever seen on an opera stage (I never saw Callas), but she is also a phenomenal singer. The three selections from Die Frau Ohne Schatten (with Birgit Nilsson and Walter Berry) are a must for any opera collector. Although the Richard Strauss and the Wagner selections are the highlights, she is stunning in the Italian repertoire, as well. Her entrance scene from Tosca makes one long to have been in the theater, with her voice filled with urgency and velvet all at once.
