5.0 out of 5 stars A Most Satisfying Story, December 27, 2008
This review is from: Leopard in the Fold (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful peek into life in South Africa; a side trip into Australia; a charming, brief stop-off in Hawaii. All of it descriptive enough to make you feel you have been to all those places and know them intimately.

These places are the setting for the story of the South Africa born-and-raised Morley family whose well-ordered lives are invaded by a beautiful, predatory woman. Storm Barralet manages to turn a passionate affair with No.2 son Dave Morley into marriage, thinking that she will be able to cash in on the Morley fortune. She underestimates the shrewd, discerning eye of Hector Morley, the family patriarch. How this affects the whole family, particularly the romance of younger brother Franz, is the scenario around which the whole story pivots.

I love the way Joy Packer writes. She develops her characters in such a way that even with their foibles you love them. Even Storm, whose dangerously brittle character seems to leap off the pages with a life of its own, rates a momentary surge of compassion toward the end of the book.

And through it all one can actually feel the hot winds of Australia, sense the beautiful, brooding landscape of South Africa where the lightning plays along the horizon on still, spring evenings. The dreamy, hypnotic beauty of Hawaii...

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance, a travelogue, and a bit of intrigue all rolled into one.

An absorbing, satisfying read!
