5.0 out of 5 stars Tamiya German Leopard 2A6, January 4, 2012
= Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Leopard 2A6 Main Battle Tank by Tamiya (Toy)
My Leopard 2a6 was purchased a few years ago while traveling through eastern europe... I always joked about how this tank has several thousand miles on the odometer.

Looking at the reviews for this kit, I did not see anything that would be helpful to other modelers who might be considering putting down almost $60.- on a Leopard as their future project... so here goes...

Tamiya made two kits... Leopard 2a5 and Leopard 2a6. Most noticeable difference is the barrel length. 2a5 uses a shorter barrel. By the way, Italeri includes both barrel length in their kit and is about 1/3 the price (and about 1/4 less detail)... IF you can find one.

Regardless, my Tamiya 1/35 Leopard 2a6 model SN: 35271 was quite possibly one of the most terrific project to date. The details on this tank were (by far) one of best non-PE kits I have seen (possibly the factor that pushed the price into the $50 range). Better was Tamiya's release of PE (Photo Etched) parts for the turret basket. Other PE manufacturers have also jumped on board and made additional updates for this kit, so yes... you can push the build process to well over $100 like I did.

Additional details include clear plastic for all the lighting and lens. OH YEAH... get this... the visors for the two figures are also clear plastic, so painting them to look like clear lens is no longer necessary... I used watch maker's glue to seal the lens in place without marring the clear finish.

The kit can be modeled in 4 different variants (decals are included) and you also have two road signs. I did not use the latter, but built mine as one that saw action in Kosovo.

The usual plastic caps are used, so the road wheels and plastic tracks are functional. Build is atypical tank... bottom hull, suspension and road wheel arms, upper hull and turret. Commander and loader figures are included, but they are half-figures. painting the crew's uniform was difficult, but I did my best and ended up lowering the figures into a more 'peering out' rather than the traditional standing position. YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOME IMPERFECTIONS...

No driver figure but the hatch is positionable.

Would I recommend this kit to an intermediate/professional level modeler? YES OMG YES!!!

Would I recommend this kit to a beginner level modeler? Probably not based on price and complexities.

By the way, I'm most likely an intermediate...

Tamiya makes their models easier to build. However, problems for amateur builders will be things like camouflage, uniform, the mini-sorted myriad of small parts that make these things look so real. I'm not sure about other builders, but it took me nearly 6 months to build mine.

Having built the 1/35 scale: Abrams (Semper Fi), Challenger, LeClerc, Type 90 (Japan), Osorio, K-1 (Korean) and T-90UD, I will have to say that this is the best looking of the bunch. Also after building the 1/35 scale, I went out and purchased the 1/16 scale as well so technically I'm starting the whole build process again, but now bigger (25lbs) and I can drive it around my neighborhood.

I hope this was helpful and good luck on your build!!
