Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-"Children/Cooking/Fantasy/Multicultural" is the designation that appears on the back of this book; it's an odd combination that doesn't work very well. The four stories, written in a pedestrian, condescending tone, are a mishmash of well-behaved multicultural youngsters, leprechauns, talking unicorns, dragons, and folk tales. The 40 vegan (excluding not only meat, fish, and poultry, but also eggs and dairy products) recipes that comprise the other half of the volume have names that attempt to relate them to the stories. The recipes are clearly written and nutritious. Great pains are taken to suggest adult help with knives, etc.; each admonition ends with a smiley face that may annoy readers. Dishes include Israeli Carrot Salad, Mexican Succotash, and Mitsue's Chinese Stir-fried Vegetables & Pineapple. Uninspiring green-and-black drawings illustrate the text. Micah Pulleyn and Sarah Bracken's Kids in the Kitchen (Sterling, 1993) is a better choice, but it is a vegetarian, not vegan, cookbook.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stories your kids will really enjoy!, April 4, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Leprechaun Cake and Other Tales: A Vegetarian Story-Cookbook (Paperback)
I bought this title for my 4-year-old daughter knowing that the stories would probably be over her head. I really wanted the recipes, and I planned to keep it for later. As it turned out, she adores the stories, which all have an element of fairy tale and fable in them. She especially like the one about the Snow Queen's Unicorn. The stories don't talk a lot about being vegetarian, which surprised me. All the recipes are vegan, and there is a strong multi-cultural focus to the stories. I hope your children love this one as much as mine does!
