Grade 3-6-From "May the saints protect ye/An' sorrow neglect ye" to "As you slide down the banisters of life,/may the splinters never point the wrong way," this collection offers well- and lesser-known Irish blessings, rhymes, and sayings. Most of the selections in this small-format book are brief, but occasional words and turns of phrase may need explaining. These nuggets of wit and wisdom are accompanied by charming watercolor illustrations brimming with life and humor and featuring rosy-cheeked cartoon folk. This would make a fun addition to holiday collections, but is not an essential purchase.

About the Author

Catharine O'Neill, a native of Toronto, Ontario, began her career as a cartoonist for magazines and newspapers. This later led to her creating humorous illustrations for more than a dozen children's books in the United States and in Canada, including her own Mrs. Dunphy's Dog and Harriet Lerner's What's So Terrible About Swallowing an Apple Seed? She now lives in Ithaca, New York, with her daughter and dog, both funny in their own way.
