From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–A solid, up-to-date examination of the disease, intelligibly explaining past fears about it, the causes, what life was like for sufferers, and leprosy today. Lucid text, organized with chapter headings and subheadings, presents the factual material in an understandable style that is unburdened by medical jargon. A few full-color photographs show how devastating the disease can be. A color map traces the spread of leprosy around the world and a diagram reviews how scientists believe the disease is transmitted. Lynette also discusses contributions made by Father Damien, Dr. Guy Faget, and Stanley Stein toward improving living conditions for leprosy patients. While the content is somewhat similar to Karen Donnelly's Leprosy (Rosen, 2002), and both books are written for the same age range, Lynette's title is more current. Students will find enough material here for reports.–Lynn K. Vanca, Akron-Summit County Public Library, Richfield, OH
