The amp is based on the Tripath TA2020 chipset. Tripath is not around anymore but this chipset somehow is still found in several amplifier products on the market. The sound quality from the Lepai is quite decent. It is rated at 20 Watts RMS. However, it comes with a 12 V wallwart power supply that is rated at a maximum current of 2 Amps. Given the power efficiency of the TA2020, one can easily figure out that the actual RMS power of this amps is only around 2 x 10 Watts RMS. According to the TA2020 data sheet, the amp will already have 10% distortion when driving an 8 Ohm speaket at 10 Watts due to the low supply voltage of 12 Volts.
However, when you are driving a 4-Ohm speaker up to around 10 Watts or an 8-Ohm speaker up to around 5 Watts, this amp has quite low distortion. While the TA2020 chipset is known for it's low distortion, one drawback of this chipset is that you will hear a constant hissing if you turn the volume up which is because of the limited amp's signal-to-noise ratio. The hissing is mostly quantization noise which is the direct result of how the TA2020 t-amp operates internally. This noise is most pronounced at higher frequencies. If you hook up the amp to an audio analyzer, you'll see a fairly high noise floor that rises with higher frequencies.
While I do like the sound quality, I am less impressed with the build quality of this amp, in particular the fragile speaker terminal. This connector seems quite fragile and may break easily. So be extra careful when making the connections.Read more ›
The sound and longevity of the Lepai is only as good as what you connect to it. The LP-2020A+ is not a $24 miracle worker. It is very cheaply made but still an incredible buy for the price. The Lepai does thin and muddy the sound of whatever you connect to it so it is advantageous to start with quality speakers that have a good frequency response. In the Amazon reviews for the main listing of the Lepai if you type in Bose, B&W, Definitive, Infinity, JBL, Carvin and Boston there are well over 100 reviews that come up. People that connect this amp to good speakers have more positive reviews of the amp. Taking it a step further, people that connect the Lepai to large bookshelf or floor standing speakers, perhaps unsurprisingly, achieve the best sound and have the least complaints. Looking at those reviews the Lepai is a 4 1/2 star product. I know sites like CNET suggest grabbing some old speakers in the garage gathering dust or a cheap pair of surround speakers or a an inexpensive pair of small bookshelf speakers with the Lepai to create a very affordable desktop setup. However, the reality is if you connect inexpensive speakers to this amp you will get mediocre sound
Looking at those reviews, people that connect this amp to quality speakers, large bookshelf or floorstanding speakers, along with having better sound have less failures with the amp. Less efficiency speakers can be more taxing on the amp and when listening to large full sounding speakers compared to small surround speakers you likely will not turn the volume up as high in order to fill the room with sound. If looking to connect the Lepai to a pair of 4 ohm speakers know that a 4 ohm load has less resistance, therefore the amp has to provide more current than with an 8 ohm load.Read more ›
Very small and light, even after 24 hrs it was not hot, or even warm.
There is a switch to allow bass/treble control or to allow sound as is, no extra stuff to increase the odds of a problem.
Simple, small, powerful, it just amps up the sound.
I did get the 12v 6amp power supply extra, put the one that comes with it in a box of "extra" stuff. = recommended by others, and a very good idea.
UPDATE 6-1-2014 the unit still works, still no problems with it. It is exactly as the pictures and description say: just a simple amp; perfect for my application, most of the tone and adjustments are done on the computer that has the audio library
In use nearly every day, 6 to 8 hours.

I do not like that it has a limiter that will cause the music to cut in and out.Published 1 day ago by Amazon Customer
I use this little amp to drive a pair of Dayton Audio B652 6-1/2-inch bookshelf speakers in my shop. Quality is great. More than capable.
Great little amp for powering your bookshelf speakers. The wattage seems low but it's definitely loud enough rock a bedroom or small living room.Published 1 month ago by T PO
I used this to run some cheap speakers. I placed these all into a ammo can to make a portable boom box to take to work. I could blow away all the job radios. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Cornholio
I wanted a cheap solution for my deck. Works ok but is very susceptible to line noise from your source.Published 2 months ago by Cognizant
Just hooked it up and it exceeds my expectations. I have my ipod piped into it and it's driving some Dual I/O speakers (reviewed elsewhere). I'm loving it. Read morePublished 3 months ago by ClubOfRome
