Book Description

Writer, cavalry officer, celebrity – Mikhail Lermontov moved in an atmosphere of political intrigue and personal recklessness, producing works considered second only to Pushkin’s in Russian literature and a career which has often been compared to Byron’s.

An interesting book. I'm glad I read it. Lermontov was a contrary character, a strange personality who brought so many of his problems on himself. For a look into Tsarist Russia this book will interest you, especially since it presents the Caucasus of that time in all its wild appeal to artistic souls. It was a frontier, a siren call to more than one great writer.

Lermontov was just one of the literary geniuses produced by Russia, a nation so prolific in stupendous talents over the centuries, but he is one of the least known in the West among ordinary literate people. Truly surprising is that both he and Pushkin died so young in pointless duels which neither of them should have been engaged in.

This biography is well worth reading.
