4.0 out of 5 stars all wonderful music from a memorable concert, December 21, 2003

This review is from: Lerner, Loewe, Lane & Friends (STAGE Benefit Concert Cast) (Audio CD)
Very enjoyable cd of wonderful music by Lerner,Loewe, Weill,Lane ect.I especially enjoyed , Joely Fisher's soaring "Come Back to Me". Also, I enjoyed a gorgeous medley of "I've grown accustumed to her Face/ Gigi "sung by Dorian Harewood. Carole Cooke is hilarious in How About You and Pamela Myers brings down the house with "What Did I have that I don't have".The finale of Kurt Weill's rarely played masterpiece"Here I'll Stay" is very effective.
There were some weak links, however. Rex Reed's amateurish and nervous rendition seemed out of place and his monologue is dated(Clinton sex scandals..) William Katt was a bit off key and there are a few other orchestrations that don't really work.(country music - My Fair Lady, disco Brigadoon ect.) However, on the whole, this cd has enough musical beauties that desrve to be replayed many times . Also, this recording has some little known gems from flop musicals like Lolita, The Little Prince and others that are worth exploring. A worthy purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some likeable moments, but it doesn't soar., September 20, 2001

This review is from: Lerner, Loewe, Lane & Friends (STAGE Benefit Concert Cast) (Audio CD)
A year ago I got "Cole Porter: A Musical Toast," a set that becomes more enjoyable with repeated listenings. So I got this production of Lerner, Lowe, & Lane, anticipating continued listening pleasures. Regrettably, this production is not on the same high level. The arrangements aren't quite as sophisticated, the performers aren't quite as impressive, and the sound quality isn't at the same standard as its predecessor.

I'm sure a lot of time and engergy were poured into this effort; and I wish I could give it a better recommendation; but there's not enough really good moments to justify the expense of this set.

There is, however, one reason why I'm glad I did get this CD.
It contains a song "In the Broken Promised Land of Fifteen," which is a real delight.
