"Tintin En Amerique" was a childhood favorite for me and my brothers. My parents bought it when they were teachers in Europe in the 50's, thus the orginal Belgian French edition.
Early Saturday or Sunday mornings, my brothers or I might select it from our parents' book shelves as a fun adventure read and re-read. The comic action makes it excellent for getting the jist of it from French, and adds to its intrique. No need for English; and figuring out the French was/is part of the fun. I remember "Pan! Pan!" as Belgian French for the sound of gun shots. Part of the fun of the book, including for our parents who were history teacher/ sociologists, is its ironic-fun use of European views of America: Very much including the then European stereotypes of America as a land of gangsters, depraved big business, and Cowboys and Indians. Enjoy!
(Unfortunately for me and my brothers personally our original "Tintin En Amerique" is one of a few treasured books that disappeared from our parents house, whereabouts unknown.
Hence, to at least get a copy, buying a replacement).

TINTIN EN AMERIQUE has no real plot or character, just plenty of empty action -- he runs across the entire continent as fast as possible, meets every stereotype, and escapes danger largely through blind luck. Unlike the books from LOTUS onward there was no research for AMERIQUE, so it's America as seen from postcards & pulp fiction, resulting in the least interesting TINTIN book this side of IN THE LAND OF THE SOVIETS.

The simplistic action does make it useful for studying French (which is, after all, the language in which Herge wrote it), and it does bridge the gap between TINTIN AU CONGO and CIGARE DU PHARAOH. After you've read all the others, AMERIQUE lets you complete your collection knowing that yes indeed, you have seen all there is to see in the TINTIN universe.
