Editorial Reviews

Double vinyl LP pressing. Therion is the band which originated, popularized and influenced the symphonic metal genre, cited as "the most adventurous metal band at present". Therion's music takes its themes from different mythologies, and is based on concepts ranging from occultism, magic and ancient traditions and writings. After the phenomenal last studio album Sitra Ahra (2010), easily Therion's most stunning effort since Theli. Therion mastermind Christofer Johnsson decided to go for a rather special project called Les Fleurs Du Mal. A new concept for Therion and symphonic metal fans.

The album was bought back from Nuclear Blast and self released, then put out on this independent label, because NB did not like the album as it was. The main issue was obtaining permission for covering the original songs. As well they really didn't like the album much either and doing an album of all French songs seemed odd. I'm not a big fan of the borderline pornographic artwork (although some people like it) although it is interesting and well done I don't think it would be worth the trouble of dealing with copyright issues on 12 or so songs. So it was released in the United States where there isn't as much red tape. However, the joke was on nuclear blast because this album seems to have done well.

Unless you are already familiar with the original songs you would think this was just another Therion album, only done in a different language. In fact this is like a French version of Secret of the Runes. By that I don't mean it sounds like SOTRs I mean it is a good album from start to finish with a consistent "theme" and sound. This is different from some Therion albums (like Lemuria/Sirius b) which are just a random assortment of very good songs that don't really have anything in common with each other. So this is one of those albums where its worth listening to the whole album all the way through even if there may be a few parts you skip over to get to the better ones. This album has a distinct feel to it and when you listen to one of the songs you are automatically transported to this sexualized French type of world. SOTRs by comparison is in Germanic languages (Swedish, English, Old German), and transports you to a Norse mythological world.

Probably the weirdest thing about this album is that the lyrics are a little more sexual in nature rather than mythological.

Supposedly the last album fromTherion for a bit while Christopher is working on his opera. I was not too enthused with this album. I'm hoping it will grow on me, but the french theme (and feel) to the music is just not the Therion I have been listening for the past ~20 years.

The lastest album from Therion is probably their best produced and mixed album ever. The vocals are stunning and instrument work has the best tone and sound from the band since Sirius B/Lemuria.The main difference is the content of the album lyrics.Instead of the World of Myths,Occult and Esoteric,we get a collection of French pop and love songs from a few decades ago.So is it a "Therion" album? The answer is yes!The songs all have the Therion treatment and just as any Therion album their will those people who totally get into it(in this case finding out what the lyrics are ,if they don't know French) and those who just enjoy the music itself and not ever care what the lyrics are.Isn't this ever Therion album? And for me there is no more mysterious and occult than love itself (I certainly don't understand it!) and at least the songs deliver a sense of joy and sadness (without knowing any French at all) than a standard Justine Bieber piece of crap.So if Therion wants to "break the rules of metal" and do an album like this more power to them. As for the songs "Poupée De Cire, Poupée De Son " is a great album kick off up tempo song," Initials B.B. " is a very close example of what a Therion song of the current time would be most familar to fans."Soer Angélique" is my favorite (a wall of sound Sixties type song with Therion treatment) and "En Alabama" is a great example of a song that uses the beauty of the language to express a feeling. The whole album is strong from start to finish if you give it a few listens.

The first time I have listened to les Fleurs Du Mal I was a little bit disappointed and couldn't finish the album to the last song. I was expecting more powerful and energetic songs which Therion has always delivered. But if you listen second or third time the songs fascinate you. They are very melodic, emotional and harmonized with vocals and instruments. I am still listening to the first 8 songs which don't let you go into the second part of the album. Second hakf of Mon Amour, Mon Ami and Polichinelle are the best tunes which you can count among Therion's. Don't hesitate to buy this album. It's even recomended for anyone who will listen to Therion for the first time.

Wonderful album, by one of my favorite bands out there. My sister heard this album, and fell in love with Therion. In general, I'm not too enthusiastic or impressed with French music. However, this is absolutely stunning music! If you're a Therion fan, or new to Therion, either way it's a great buy!

Since putting this CD in the player in my car, I've taken it out for a total of maybe 4 days. I put it in in mid-August, and I listen to my CD player virtually every day.

I kept expecting to burn myself out on it, but every time I listen, I hear something new in one of the arrangements that I didn't catch before. The songs start with terrific melodies and beautiful sounding lyrics (not that I have any idea what they mean) and then add so many deep and textured layers that I just don't seem to get tired of any of them. From the concept of the album, I expected it to be an intriguing oddity, most likely a weird blend of styles and a "filler" album in Therion's discography. Instead, it's just completely mesmerized me. The vocals are stunning, the drums are tight and bursting with great fills, the bass is fantastic and the guitar work is blistering without ever overwhelming the songwriting, which is superb. Finally, the interplay of the symphonic and metal components may be the most seamless on any of the Therion albums I own (7 or 8, I think).

Fantastic, and well worth listening to over and over again.
